Celebrate LGBT+ History Month with inclusive classrooms all year round! As we come to the end of LGBTQ+ History Month, it is important to reflect on the significant strides made towards inclusivity and understanding within the education sector. It is 21 years since the controversial and homophobic legislation known as Section 28, introduced under Margaret Thatcher, was repealed in England and Wales. The withdrawal of Section 28 marked a critical turning point, allowing educators to foster an environment of openness, respect, and understanding. It empowered our academies to address LGBTQ+ topics, ensuring that all students feel seen, respected, and included, irrespective of their background or identity. At Leigh Academies Trust, we are committed to building upon this progress. Our mission to deliver "education for a better world" encompasses creating a culture where every member of our community feels valued and supported. The repeal of Section 28 has enabled us to integrate LGBTQ+ education into our curriculum, encouraging empathy, equality, and respect among our students. #LGBTQHistoryMonth #InclusivityInEducation #LeighAcademiesTrust #EducationForABetterWorld

In an era where gender-based discrimination is on the rise, particularly affecting LGBTQ+ students, it's crucial to open dialogues in our schools. Circle practice offers a powerful approach for sharing personal stories, encourages the expression of diverse opinions, and facilitates meaningful discussions on LGBTQ+ topics. It's important to create a regular schedule for these discussions, moving beyond the "heroes and holidays" approach to ensure consistent engagement with LGBTQ+ issues. Additionally, teachers as facilitators are well-trained in creating a supportive environment is key to the success of these circles. By integrating these practices, we can build more inclusive and empathetic school communities where all students feel valued and heard. This approach not only supports LGBTQ+ students but also educates the entire school community, fostering a culture of acceptance and understanding. Inspired by "Circle Forward: Building Restorative School Community" by Carolyn Boyes-Watson and Kay Pranis. #Pride #InclusiveEducation #LGBTQSupport
