Prof Rob Phillips of the University of Queensland and Prof Herbert Valensise of the University of Rome presented exciting new research supporting the use of USCOM 1A in hypertensive disease in pregnancy at the 2024 Cross-Strait Maternal Fetal Medical Symposium and 5th XOGA Annual Conference in Xiamen, China. The meeting was attended by nearly 1000 specialist Maternal Health physicians from across China. Preeclampsia remains the major global cause of maternal and foetal morbidity and mortality and #Uscom is emerging as an innovative solution to improve its management and outcomes. Preterm birth: A preventable tragedy Preterm birth is the leading cause of neonatal death and long-term neurological morbidity. But it's important to remember that preterm birth is often preventable. If a pregnant woman is experiencing a threatening preterm delivery, tocolytic drugs, such as Atosiban, may be used to postpone delivery by 48 hours. This gives doctors time to administer antenatal corticosteroids and transport the mother to a specialized neonatal care facility. Specialized neonatal care facilities have the equipment and expertise to provide the best possible care for premature babies. A new study shows a first-trimester algorithm that includes a blood test, ultrasound data, and maternal characteristics predicted two-thirds of preterm preeclampsia and three-quarters of early-onset preeclampsia among study participants. The authors wrote, "This screening will make it possible to prevent preeclampsia and its consequences for both mother and child. We must now work to make this test accessible to all pregnant women."
