This video of Roger Federer has been going viral But everyone is missing the point: He is able to hold on the mission for greatness, let go of a loss and be able to show up for greatness again in the next moment. These are two opposing ideas held at the same time. Fully embrace your failure. Be unrelenting in your excellence. It sounds like a Zen koan. Because he loses almost every other moment, one of his superpowers is to let go of what went wrong and fully commit to what is opportunity for excellence is now present. If he couldn’t do that, he would never have gotten to where he is. Takeaway Letting go of the past is a huge part of mental strength and excellence. It may be a bit overkill as this has already been posted through various organizations, but I wanted to share my own version of my appointment as the CEO and President of PetMeds® and PetCareRx Inc. So many people ask me how they can get on boards…sometimes it’s this simple: A year ago, Michael Rempell mentioned to Stacy Berns (or my dear friend, Stacy Bernsita) that a pet company was looking for a board candidate. She recommended me because she knew I was already serving on boards AND she knows that I am passionate about my farm and animals. That information was shared with Peter Cobb who graciously jumped on a phone call with me and then passed that along to the rest of the BOD of PetMeds® including Gian Fulgoni Leslie C. G. Campbell Diana Garvis Purcel, MBA, CPA (inactive), NACD.DC and Jodi Watson Since then, I’ve had a year of learning the company, under the leadership of Matt Hulett and extend my gratitude to Matt and the entire board for granting me the opportunity to serve as an independent board director. This esteemed group is driven by a mission that resonates deeply with me. Beyond what has been written elsewhere, my professional career is rooted in the entrepreneurial spirit instilled by my parents, who had me and my siblings working in their tortilla factory from a young age. From warehouses to retail, from Texas to New York City, my path has been shaped by diverse corporate and entrepreneurial experiences. I've had the privilege of working for leaders who have been my strongest supporters and gave me the opportunities to grow professionally and personally: Mindy Grossman Jason Rabin Diane von Furstenberg and my former business partner Tony Melillo to name a few. And…I have so many other sponsors in my life that promote my name when I’m not in the room (the list is too long but thank them all). I’ve had people who have “mentored” me without knowing it and have had the past three years of board experiences learning from too many impressive leaders to name. What I can tell you is that I continue to learn from every experience and have been able to round out my skills to be a better leader and operator because of each and every experience. I’ve lived the roller coaster ride of retail over the past decades of transformations. Building relevant and profitable businesses, finding white space opportunities, and centering everything around the ever-evolving consumer is what drives me to succeed. I didn’t think my personal passions and my professional life would intersect in this way but my 8 rescue horses, 2 rescue dogs, and 1 talkative senior cat at Sugar Bear Farm in upstate NY will be happy that I am helping other pets live healthier and longer lives too. I am truly excited to partner with the PetCareRx Inc and PetMeds® team to foster a company that exemplifies excellence for our employees, customers, and investors alike. Before Orchid, Noor taught a class at Stanford University on Reproductive Technology where she did AI and genomics research with Anshul Kundaje (deep learning for genomics) and Sebastian Thrun (computer vision). She also started a speaker series called #nofilter, cofounded Stanford’s Center for Distributed Trust, ran a translational group for entrepreneurial researchers in the Stanford AI Lab, and earned my M.S/B.S in Computer Science from Stanford. Before her academic career, Noor was selected as a teenage Thiel fellow. She also started a digital health company called Remedy, which helped doctors get instant answers from specialists.
