Whilst the topic of addressing the future of modern slavery is no laughing matter, it was extremely positive to engage in forward thinking dialogue between the Fair Supply team, the Australian Government, Walk Free, the IOM and the hundreds of dedicated business who participated in the Fair Supply road show event ´The future of addressing modern slavery’ in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane & Perth this past week.
If I wrote all the great takeaways, you’ll have an essay to read!!
Some key discussion points to advance Australia’s collective response to Modern Slavery included:
* Importance of credible risk assessment well beyond tier 1 supply chains
* Transparency enhances brand reputation
* Imbedding ethical and responsible due diligence in business operations and supply chains is essential for ethical business practices
* Why remediation should be the preferred pathway over ´blacklisting’ suppliers with risk of modern slavery
* Collaboration with supporting entities is key
Trends highlighted that whilst Australia has a strong approach to the addressing Modern Slavery, collaboration between the
Australian Government, stakeholders and businesses can only strengthen responsibility to reduce the 49.6 million people in situations of modern slavery in the world today to 0 #WalkFree Global Slavey Index)
Yes, I remain optimistic !
Immense thanks to Kim Randle and the #FairSupply team for including IOM in this fabulous & valuable event.
