And, with only a few days until the engines roar to life at the 2024 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, I am reminded of the incredible breadth of technology that goes into orchestrating this huge global event. 🏎   Last year, Melbourne technology and ASX-listed company, Catapult, received praise from Mercedes’ former Formula 1 strategy director (and current Team Principal for Williams Racing), James Vowles, for the impact their racing software has on the ability to make the difference between winning or losing an F1 race. Having essentially created a highly optimised GPS system, technology and data was used in this example to give teams accurate and up-to-date information about different race tactics, informing pit stop strategies and helping drivers make informed tactical moves on track.   Amid the excitement of innovative racing tech, there are other forms of cutting-edge technology that also contribute to Australians’ enjoyment of the sport, especially given the growth and diversity of new fans attracted to F1. Getting to and from the Melbourne Grand Prix is a highly complex transportation journey of its own. What will happen to famous car races like the Indianapolis 500, Le Mans 24 Hours, Daytona 500, and the British Grand Prix? Each race has its own unique history and challenges. But what will happen if the climate crisis people have their way and converts to all electric vehicles? Back in the early 1980’s I was fortunate enough to travel around the world (thanks to enlisting in the U.S. Army). I was also fortunate enough to be able to travel to Monte Carlo and watch the famous Monaco Grand Prix, which is part of the Formula One World Championship. It was amazing to watch, to say the least. Not to mention Monte Carlo is absolutely incredible and gorgeous. So, what could possibly happen to the racing industry? It could impact races like Le Mans by potentially changing the race dynamics. Electric vehicles usually have different energy and charging requirements compared to traditional fuel-based cars. Longer race durations or different race formats might be considered to accommodate charging needs, affecting strategies and overall race dynamics. The Le Mans could potentially be 36 hours long vs the current 24 hours it takes to race. Cars usually make around 30 to 40 pit stops for fuel during the race. EVs would take much longer to charge. Or, they’d need to switch out batteries, assuming that would be quicker. Integrating today's battery technology into racing would pose additional safety challenges due to the flammability and toxicity of batteries. Fires involving electric vehicle batteries would be much more challenging to extinguish compared to traditional fuel fires. Not to mention very toxic to both people and the environment. Safety measures would need to be enhanced to address these specific risks, potentially impacting response times and overall safety protocols in the event of a crash. Electric race cars are generally quieter than traditional combustion engine cars. So, the sound and thrills of watching and hearing the races like the Indy500 would not only take longer to race (potentially 2 or more hours) but it would also lose some of its appeal from not hearing those gas fueled engines. What I provided here is just the tip of the iceberg in how racing will end up changing. Note, I said how it will change. It’s coming because the climate crisis people and far left are pushing their agendas onto everyone else.

It's not just the 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫; it's about 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲, 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, and 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 —all of which are crucial in both racing and in 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞. This brings me to an interesting reflection: just like in F1, 𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬, whether personal, professional, or financial, requires a blend of 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝 (taking action), 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 (making well-informed decisions), 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲 (planning our moves wisely), and 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 (knowing when to make our move). "Some cities are more optimal for street racing than others. “You need to provide a layout that balances racing, spectators and business needs,” said Zaffelli. “In Vegas, the public transportation structure, population density, and dimensions are totally different than in a place like Singapore, which is more European rather than American-style. The first year is also the most difficult. It usually takes three years to get to the right level.”" "“In Singapore, you can just lift everything — there is not a single nail put down,” said Jarno Zaffelli, the lead track designer of the upcoming 2026 Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid. “I don’t know if this is the case of other street circuits, but in Singapore, as soon as the race is finished, five hours later, everything is open.” Okay, I will confess - Singapore got lucky, when we went for the F1 Circuit design, we had just finished the MBS integrated resort, refurb the roads at Marina Bay, had a new bridge, got someone to build, own and operate a circular white elephant ... and in that space that we had no plans for to build an F1 paddock- we decided that we could get it done. Now the F1 race in Singapore is more than just about cars - there are concerts every night; and the public transport system learned how to move people in and out quickly. It was also a place where bankers and tycoons congregate because the city is seamlessly connected by road to the airport that is seamlessly connected to every other city in Asia - and most of the world. There is no need to drive 2 hours out, and then 2 hours back to civilisation. Good things sometimes comes in small packages. Also not everyone wins when the F1 or Taylor Swift comes to town. Telling a shop that is going bust that the macro impact was in billions is cold comfort.
