When I look at this photo of Shannen Doherty, I think of my Mom. She didn't like wearing a wig, they were too hot and scratchy. So she always wore head scarves. I will never forget how the woman at the deli counter at King Soopers taught her how to tie it while we were grocery shopping. My Mom shouldn't have had such a tragic outcome and neither should have Shannen Doherty. Halle Tecco, MPH, MBA you are spot on. Shannen's death is particularly devastating because it was 100% avoidable. That's why I started Gabbi to ensure every woman knows her risk and gets to an early detection. I wish we could have helped Shannen Doherty.

The saddest part of Shannen Doherty's death is that her diagnosis and care were delayed due to her being uninsured. She lost her insurance because her management firm failed to pay the premium. Her cancer spread aggressively, and she eventually got diagnosed when she re-enrolled. She sued her management firm in 2015: “Had she been insured and able to visit her doctor, the cancer could potentially have been stopped, thus obviating the need for the future treatment (including mastectomy and chemotherapy).” Too many Americans skip or delay care due to the high cost. And 61% of uninsured adults say go without needed care because of the cost. 💫 Subscribe to my substack here: https://lnkd.in/e9pt7WvA Sources: https://lnkd.in/ezqtqgkM https://lnkd.in/eB2jHe7G

The fact that our cancer screening rates continue to stay around 60% across the board is simply unacceptable. Preventive cancer screening should be funded for every citizen, not sure why there is even any debate about this. It makes sense even from a purely financial and obviously a human perspective.

Had she become poor by then? I would have thought she could afford to pay for healthcare, as a former Hollywood celebrity. But most people feel that paying “out of pocket” is wrong, and wait for insurance coverage.
