The thing that you think is ordinary, is not. This is a super episode, where Jo Smyth shares her journey of courage, which in her forties led her to leave a corporate job and start her own business, and in her fifties, finalising writing a book called 'Finding My Voice,' which features the stories of 50 women and their experiences of courage. Jo mentions that the catalyst for making life-changing decisions came after returning from two week-long women's retreats to Fiji. In both cases, the uncovered revelations and the virtual support of a hundred women who had her back fuelled her to pursue things she had never thought possible. Throughout this glorious conversation, Jo emphasises the importance of recognising and celebrating the courage within ourselves and others. She explores the strength of women in previous generations, the influence of strong women as role models, the benefits of sharing personal stories, and how it helps inspire others and discover yourself. Jo is a 'nice' (her words, I would have said, AMAZING) person who exemplifies the qualities of a giraffe  - quiet, clever, and adaptable animals, respected for their intelligence, and able to see things from a different perspective and respond with purpose. On this episode we hear from Sherry Marek . She starts her story by sharing that she grew up on a farm in Iowa and how inspired she was by her mother who started a catering business on the side. She started her career in hotels working in the corporate office of Hilton and Intercontinental. Then went on to start a business intelligence company with her husband, which they have just sold 29 years later. Now she is advocating to encourage more women into STEM. A theme that you will hear throughout her story is the people she met and the friends that she made around the world that kept her in hospitality. And now with a group of friends they make an annual trip together. She shares with us what motivated her to start her own business, and how the company evolved over the years and what strategy they applied. Growing the business globally and running a business with your partner. For her own career growths, she calls out some of the women who have supported her growth and sometimes they created roles together. One thing that she hopes for women to do is to acknowledge their accomplishments, and I could not agree more.
