Are you as concerned as I am about Zimbabwe's increasing food related health problems? According to the Global Nutrition report, poor consumption patterns are leading to increased prevalence of non-communicable diseases in the country. Only 16% of Zimbabwean children under 5 have minimally diverse diets and only 10% get a minimum acceptable diet. Almost 29% of Zimbabwean women have iron deficiency anaemia. More than a quarter of adolescent women and more than half of adult women are overweight while 27% of women and 7.3% of men are obese. Diabetes is estimated to affect 8.1% of adult women and 7.3% of adult men while 26.7% of women and 29.1% of men have raised blood pressure problems. These worrying trends appear to be rising and are linked to an increasingly poor diet where average consumption of vegetables and legumes in Zimbabwe is below the regional average while consumption of sugar, salt, oil and highly processed foods is high. Meanwhile Zimbabwe is experiencing increased food insecurity resulting from environmental degradation, poor land use and climate change.
Addressing these problems needs to be done by looking at the whole food system as well as the production and consumption environment. One successful approach has been through food and seed festivals which bring together producers, retailers and consumers to celebrate nutritious, climate-resilient, local foods produced in an environmentally sustainable way. The Harare Good Seed and Food Festival is now in its twelfth year and gets thousands of visitors from both urban and rural areas.
The theme for this year’s festival is “Celebrating the Diversity and Resilience of Zimbabwe’s Foods”. The festival will be held on 13th and 14th September at the Harare Botanical Gardens. You can get involved by hiring a stall to showcase your products, your company or organisations work with food. You could organising a cooking demonstration an agriculture demonstration or a demonstration of food processing. You could organise an activity at the Youth Zone or Kids Zone. You can support the festival as a donor in exchange for exiting exposure and branding opportunities.
