So apparently I'm not done talking about Oprah's weight. Except it's not really about Oprah or her speciifc weight. It's about diet culture; specificially, the sad fact that despite all the progress we've made over the past five to 10 years toward a more inclusive beauty standard, we still live in a culture that demonizes and dehumanizes fat bodies. We judge them so harshly that even Oprah — one of the most powerful women in the world — apparently looks in the mirror and instead of seeing influence, beauty, tenacity, and creativity, sees a body that society deems ugly and shameful. As Jennifer Weiner writes in this op-ed for the The New York Times: "[Her legacy] will also be the idea that every woman’s body is a battleground, that our appetites are to be mistrusted and subdued, that fat is an enemy to be combated with every weapon available, that the war is never over and that thinness is a woman’s true life’s work, just as it’s been so much of hers." 🎁 A gift link for you: https://lnkd.in/gkKf9bB4 **Liked this post?
