A big congrats to the BBC World Service Audiences Team for winning an award for its 'Global Audience Measurement' project at the Quirks Marketing Research and Insight Excellence Awards. Also, well done to all the other winners and finalists. What is the Global Audience Measure (GAM)? It is an annual update of how many people are consuming the BBC weekly for ALL services in ALL countries across ALL platforms (TV, Radio, website and social media). In 2023 it included reach data from 247 countries/ territories, over 200,000 respondents and over 1.6 billion data points! It plays a crucial role demonstrating ROl. However, it is far more than a performance tool. Andrew Bradford I must vehemently support Brian Jacobs on using established proper terminology, definitions and derivations. Truth will always win ultimately. You can and surely must "win" to maintain integrity. Next you will advising us that Kantar Media measures "impressions", historically aka OTS or gross impressions based on a persons based meaningful proximity (in the view-ability/audibility zone) to media content or ads. However, in the US at least, 'impressions' has become a completely nebulous term merely reflecting the most beneficial basis for the media vehicle or user. Here it can mean anything from device based, content- rendered-counts (aka MRC's so called, "viewable impressions"), i.e, no OTS; to what Route Research Ltd. has described as "realOTS" (historically correct!); to persons based Eyes/Ears-On or contacts; and now "attention impressions", each of which have vastly different relevance and relation to content value and/or creative ad effects for any media vehicle. The numbers for each of these levels are also vastly different of course. Cross-Media Measurement should not be confused with Cross-Platform Measurement although sadly you are not alone on this one.
