Chip contract manufacturer GlobalFoundries has received $35 million in funding from the U.S. government to develop state-of-the-art gallium nitride silicon semiconductors. Gallium nitride (GaN) enables particularly energy-efficient chips with high performance in the smallest possible space. In addition to 5G and 6G mobile communications, the automotive industry, and power grids, the fields of application also include aerospace and defense systems - in the latter areas, Globalfoundries is working with the U.S. Department of Defense. GlobalFoundries signs a 10-year $3.1 billion chip supply contract with the US Department of Defense Global Foundries announced that the US Department of Defense (DoD) has awarded it a new ten-year contract to supply chips for a wide range of critical aerospace and defense applications. The initial allocation for September this year was $17.3 million, with a 10-year total expenditure limit of $3.1 billion. The new contract provides the Department of Defense and its contractors with the opportunity to use semiconductor technology produced by GlobalFoundries at their US factories. These facilities are certified by the highest security level (Trusted Supplier Class 1A) of the Ministry of Defense, implement strict security measures that have been verified to protect sensitive information, and manufacture unaffected chips with the highest level of integrity. The new contract also provides the Ministry of Defense and its contractors with access to GlobalFoundries' powerful design ecosystem, IP library, early access to new technologies under development, rapid and efficient prototyping, and comprehensive mass manufacturing. This contract was awarded through the Trusted Access Program Office (TAPO) of the Defense Microelectronics Agency (DMEA), This is the third consecutive ten-year contract between the Ministry of Defense and the GlobalFoundries wafer foundry business team. Global Foundries disclosed in May this year that its factory in Malta, New York is recognized by the US Department of Defense as a trusted foundry with the ability to manufacture safe semiconductors for a range of critical aerospace and defense applications.
