🚨 New manuscript 🚨 While many follow the guidance of Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma or WESTERN TRAUMA ASSOCIATION, we systematically reviewed all published guidelines on prophylactic splenic artery embolization after high grade blunt injury looking at recommendations and guideline quality. "Recommendation of pSAE is more common in guidelines which are of high quality. However, there is vast heterogeneity of recommended practice guidelines, likely based on individual trauma systems rather than the available evidence. A research review co-authored by Himanshu Gupta, MD, Director of Cardiac Imaging at Valley Medical Group and Juan B. Grau, MD, FACS, FACC, Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery, The Valley Hospital, was recently published in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology. The authors explored two method of septal reduction therapy (SRT) for patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) - alcohol septal ablation and septal myectomy - and highlight the need for further training of septal myectomy surgeons to ensure access to optimal septal reduction therapies for patients with HCM. SRT relieves left ventricular outflow tract obstruction and helps to reduce symptoms in patients with obstructive HCM. Next Tuesday (12 March), Rik Hendrix will defend the thesis ‘The membrane oxygenator. From a black to a white box’ at 16.00h @ Maastricht University. ➡️ In this thesis, various aspects of oxygenators are studied. Oxygenators are artificial lungs used in heart-lung machines during cardiac surgery and in the support of patients with heart and/or lung failure. The thesis shows that all oxygenator types have their own optimal blood flow range where gas exchange is optimal. Gas exchange efficiency decreases at higher blood flows. Moreover, it is shown that over time, clots in oxygenators continue growing, without decreasing gas exchange efficiency. By using smaller gas exchange fibers, it is possible to decrease oxygenator volume and increase gas exchange efficiency. Sometimes analytics projects take years to realize tangible outcomes. This one is 5 years in the making. Our cardiac surgery teams across UPMC achieved patient outcomes in the top quartile of the US by marrying analytics to clinical practice. Some categories, like aortic valve surgery, our teams were in the top 5% of the US outcomes. 5 years ago we set out to centralize and unify our clinical registry data with the intention of helping drive better decision making and improving outcomes. We're seeing those results now. But we still have more to do. More lives to save. Lesson: Analytics doesn't solve problems over night and certainly not in isolation. Analytics is a marathon, not a sprint, and needs operationalized, not just presented, to truly make a difference. #upmc #cardiacsurgery #dataanalytics

🎉 Thrilled to share 🎉 that I am a co-first author of the newly published paper now available in The American Journal of Surgery. This work could not have been possible without the collaboration of my fellow co-first author, Huan Ma. Thanks to all our team members at the Department of Critical Care, the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. Our paper highlights the potential long-term harmful effects of red blood cell transfusion among ICU sepsis survivors, calling for a more restrictive transfusion strategy. I'm eager to see how these insights will advance our understanding and practice in critical care.
