OK - its out of the bag... Im a MASSIVE F1 fan! I won't bore those that are not but I was struck by an article in the BBC today that talked to McLaren's rise over the past year to challenge the dominance of "the marker leader", Redbull. This is something that many founders struggle with - how do I challenge an established market leader? Zak Brown, the boss Mclaren, has the answer.... Its not having "the best driver" or "the best car"... its about leadership, building your team and releasing the potential of your people. In Dec 2022 (20 months ago) Brown appointed Andreas Stella as Team Principal. The change has paid dividends in the past 6 months, but its this comment about Stella that nailed it for me: "He unlocked the talent that we already had here," Brown says. "We've got approximately 1,000 people here in F1. I changed three. But it was three leaders. So, 997 are the same people who gave us the [uncompetitive] car at the beginning of 2023. A leader's job is to get the most out of their people and that's what we didn't have previously. We weren't able to let the talent we have in here flourish. Andrea communicates very well. He listens very well. He's very hard-working. He's very technical. He leads by example. All the traits you would want in a great leader. He unlocked the potential this team clearly had sitting there." So as Founders and CEOs do we behave in ways that unlock the potential of OUR teams? I think there's an excellent point about teamwork made in this article, specifically about learning as a team what your skills gaps might be. It's an excellent lesson for all leaders. Zak Brown, McLaren CEO, is talking about mistakes the team has made which have cost them races. He references a comment by Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff: "I thought Toto was accurate with his comment. He said: 'Well, sometimes you figure these things out once they've kind of been put on your plate.'" On the face of it, you might question this. How can a high-performing team made up of experienced and very capable professionals still need to learn race craft? Surely with all their experience they should be capable of responding to any situation? But that's not how teams work. A team is a separate beast; its responses come not only from its individual members, but also the interactions between them and the processes the team follows. Until a team has fully formed and been put to the test, you can't be sure where those gaps will be. The answer? Give a team time to grow, in the same way you would an individual. If you expect a new staff member to hit the ground running and be delivering from day 1, I'm afraid you're a bit naive, and you're either going to be disappointed, or tricked into believing you were right. A team needs the same things an individual needs - opportunities to learn, to experience, to adapt and overcome. As a team leader, you need to understand this, and explain it to your team members. Don't allow them to be disillusioned because things didn't go perfectly first time. This isn't a new concept - the stages of group development were first formalised by Bruce Tuckman in 1965 - but sometimes in today's incredibly fast-paced and results-driven world (especially in tech) we need reminding that teams are defined not by the greatness of their individual members, but how they work together to deliver. Enabling great teamwork is what top managers in all realms of life - but especially sport - are good at. #teamleaders #teamgrowth

Starting with Max Verstappen's recent success last Sunday, it's crucial to recognize that his achievements illustrate a valuable lesson. While he may be the face of the victory, it's essential to understand that any successful endeavor, be it Formula 1 racing or any other project, is a collective effort. In any team or project, the importance of each team member cannot be overstated. Success often hinges on the smallest details, and it's the dedication and expertise of every individual that contribute to the overall outcome. Just as Max Verstappen relies on his team's meticulous work to secure victory, every project needs a cohesive team that works together seamlessly. Furthermore, having a clear leader with a vision is key to steering the team toward success. Much like the 555 Management team led by Marc Van Sintruyen, who not only possesses creative ideas but also brings together global teams, a visionary leader can inspire and guide the group toward achieving their goals. This leadership is crucial in making large-scale projects, like live experiences at major sport events such as F1, a reality. What I Learned about my Relationship with Failure from Formula One Topical post as the F1 rolls into Singapore today. This is Lewis Hamilton, the British Formula One driver.  Hamilton has won a joint-record seven World Drivers' Championship titles, and holds the records for the most wins, pole positions and podium finishes. From someone some people consider the GOAT, it is interesting to listen to how he discusses his relationship with failure and how he uses it to a champion.  Here are a few key take outs: 1. Failure is Necessary. Most people fail more than they succeed, but failure is where you build strengths and become better. Change your relationship with failure and don’t see it as a negative. 2. Welcome Failure. Set goals and ambitions where success is not guaranteed. If the goal is easy anyone can do it and you are not challenging yourself. The harder the challenge, the stronger you will get in achieving it, but this means you will fail along the way. 3. Live With Failure. Lewis watches the race replays, feels the pain and analyses where he can improve. Don’t be afraid to embrace your failure. Let it hurt and learn from it. Teamwork at its best! Formula 1 racing kicks off this weekend in Bahrain. I've been watching Formula 1 for about 6 years now and it's becoming hugely popular, even here in America. One of the reasons I like watching is that each race is often won or lost, based on leadership decisions, and team work. While the driver is obviously essential, there's so much more going on behind the scenes. There's a leadership team that determines the strategy during the race, and the pit crew that has to work like a Swiss watch every tire change. Every millisecond counts. Then there's the team back at the factory who worked on the car all week to optimize it for the track. In an organization like that, you can't have silos, or you just won't win. And you need EVERY team to show up on race day! The key to that? Everyone understands the goal, and to achieve it, every part must be firing on all cylinders.
