About a year ago, I finished my PhD. The thesis itself quietly went online and open access earlier this year, but hasn't moved any mountains in terms of its impact. Who has time for 200 pages? Today, I'm really proud to publish the first in a series of briefs on leadership in market systems development (MSD) - a coherent field of practice that applies systems thinking to development challenges. This is going to make a much bigger difference than my thesis, and it's built on the work of 50+ people who participated in the MSD leadership clinics over 6 months in 2023. Over 70 hours of breakout discussions, hundreds of JamBoard frames, and google docs so peppered with comments your eyes start to bleed. https://lnkd.in/e63-wNAj Where do MSD leaders come from? (and where do they go?) generates new knowledge for and by the industry, about common pathways that MSD practitioners take in their journey to lead (in various roles, not just TL!) The six pathways are: (1) growth chamber, (2) unexpected roots and shoots, (3) strictly business, (4) movers & shakers, (5) loyal stalwarts, and (6) global nomads. While the names aren't perfect, they give us some language to notice patterns of who gets opportunities and who doesn't. And the rest of the paper focuses on what organisations can (and should) be doing to help more project staff learn, thrive and grow in their influence and capability - both donors and implementers. It takes two to tango - and it's critical that we break down narratives and mental models that 'poaching' of good staff should hold us back from investing in our teams, in every single MSD project. Forthcoming findings on the career mobility of national MSD professionals goes further than this on important questions, including a stronger inclusion and equity perspective than we've published here.

Today I had the pleasure of congratulating our third cohort of MedHealth Emerging Leaders program graduates. These, along with previous graduates, have been nothing short of amazing! Many individuals demonstrating true leadership, resilience, forward planning, a growth mindset and enthusiasm, among other impressive skills. For context, I was first appointed with MedHealth just over 2 years ago, where the first item I was tasked with was to build this program. It took 12 months to build and continues to evolve, comprising of various modules, eLearns, workplace activities, accountability groups, forums, surveys, live sessions and other means of regular connections. In the beginning, my manager at the time had already given the program an excellent foundation to build from and is a leader I learned so much from and admired during our short time working together. I consider this her legacy, and although I always take great pride in building meaningful learning programs, this was especially so as I always wanted to bring her vision to light and make her proud by building a kick-ass program that would make a real difference. Fast-forward to now... having picked many brains from SME's, my current and previous leaders, and being dedicated to continuous improvement, I couldn't be more proud of the results, with many thanks to the guidance and encouragement of such amazing leadership. Whenever a learning professional builds any learning program, the first question is 'why'? What is the intended end result? (Whether or not this succeeds is evident in evaluation, using both quantitative and qualitative data.) The purpose of this program was always to prepare our emerging leaders for leading the inevitable growth that MedHealth is embarking on, improving workplace practices and overall, changing behaviours in a positive way. The anecdotal feedback I've been receiving suggests that this has been succeeded and I'm so proud! Thank you to our CEO and Executive Director in joining me in congratulating all of our MedHealth Emerging Leaders graduates, it's always been my pleasure delivering it and I'm looking forward to seeing what the next cohort achieve in their leadership journey! - Michelle

The MIS Academic Leadership Conference #MALC2023 identified five best practices for increasing and sustaining academic-industry collaboration. The panel of Vince Ford, SVP, Curtis Institute, Jeff Hamilton, SVP, Pfizer Digital, Tarun Kapoor, MD, MBA, SVP, Virtua Health, Christopher Kearns, VP, Kyndryl, & George Llado, Board member, Charles River Lab, concluded that: 1. Industry is interested in collaborating with academia, but often does not know how to start. Academics need to initiate the conversation. 2. Talent development is a better first step than complex research projects. 3. Talent development at scale such as competitions (e.g., https://lnkd.in/ehbHgPtM, https://lnkd.in/epHmxabz) can generate immediate value and have a visible impact. 4. Collaborative academic-industry research is possible but will need to overcome the time and shorter-term performance pressures faced by industry. 5. Multi-layered relationships that include talent, engagement, and research are preferred over one-time initiatives. As regulatory requirements in the health sector and pharmaceutical industry get stringent, young professionals are being challenged to take senior leadership roles. This being a good thing in ensuring technical suitability of professionals taking up jobs, it is also important to acknowledge that though competent technically, young professionals do not have the operational experience needed in such scenarios. It's important to challenge them to grow while also creating avenues for them to gain insights & experience while delivering results. I share insights on how young professionals and organizational leaders can close on this gap to ensure optimal performance by young professionals in these senior leadership roles.
