I just got back from a mission trip in Ocotal Nicaragua with Get Strong Ministries. It was a pretty unique experience in that it combined discipleship with CrossFit (and specifically a competition where gyms come from all over the country) providing a pretty powerful platform for building relationships and personal growth. I had ZERO idea what I was getting myself into but I knew I wanted to be a light and to somehow communicate to people that they are loved and worthy. The focus of this ministry is to foster relationships through fitness, creating environments where people feel safe to be nurtured, coached, mentored, and encouraged to be vulnurable. Gyms, especially CrossFit gyms, are incredible vehicles for this kind of relationship building. #iykyk If they ultimately develop a relationship with God, great. But it's okay if they don't. The number 1 focus is to simply love on them the way we've been loved. This trip pushed me out of my comfort zone. In fact, getting uncomfy is why I started CrossFit in the first place. It allowed me to engage in conversations (in a language that isn't my own) with young women who were also stepping into unfamiliar territory. Despite language, cultural, and geographic barriers, we discovered how much we have in common. We are all seeking love, belonging and self-worth. And when we take the time to create connections, listen more than we speak, build relationships, we are creating a foundation of trust and empathy that allows for us to support and uplift each other and ultimately help guide each other toward a deeper purpose.
