“Allll the people, sooo many people” 🎶 😂😂 - So it’s May the 12th, 1997. 220 football players from all walks of life, ages, genders and religions gathered at the spiritual home of Sunday league football, otherwise known as Hackney Marshes for a #nikefootball ad. Originally the home to a staggering 120 full size pitches. Not a single soul knew the idea, that was kept under wraps, but it was all rather exciting. 🤯 At the time, Nike were launching high end ad, after high end ad. Big budgets with big stars generating even bigger results. Enter writer Tony Malcolm, who was working were at an agency called Simons Palmer Denton Clemmow and Johnson (phew!) or Simons Palmer as it was thankfully abbreviated to and their client Nike wasn’t happy. It just wasn't gaining traction in football. 🏀 & 🏃🏾 🏃♀️ ✅ but ⚽️ 👎🏾 Brands at the time such as Umbro, PUMA Group & adidas were on top with market share. And Nike needed a new angle. They needed to be relatable, realistic, and accessible whilst promoting the hard wearing performance of the predominantly at the time, football boots. In my opinion, an absolute top bins execution. Strategy is about choosing a market segment and creating a value proposition around that customer. It almost always means saying no to another segment. Trying to be everything to everyone rarely works. "Am I a bad person?" Nike's latest Ad campaign featuring the world's top athletes opens up with this hitting question, which also happens to be the tagline of the campaign. And goes on saying "I love Power, I am delusional, I am Maniacal. Does that make me a bad person?" And before you can form an opinion here, it slams you with a powerful conclusion "Winning isn't for everyone". And there you go! It hits hard on your ego making you question yourself for not desperately wanting "Winning" like those athletes in the adfilm! The ad is doing its job & masterfully so, irrespective of whatever your answer is to the golden question! Feels like they're trading their cool athlete vibe for a fast-fashion look. Yikes! 🏪 Ditching offline stores for online-only? Bold move, but seems like they overestimated our loyalty. We still like trying on shoes, Nike! 🎨 Swapping epic brand marketing for boring performance ads. Where's the creativity, folks? Result? 📉 Their stock's doing more diving than their swimmers. 📈 Competitors like On and HOKA are gaining traction with their focus on performance and innovation.
