We can't ignore the elephant in the room when it comes to product. The reality is that what we call agile, modern product management is hard and requires talented, well-trained professionals and an organisation willing to invest in these practices. Hearing Lenny Rachitsky's interview with Brian Chesky it's easy to recognise anti-patterns and pain points many organisations face when developing software products. Airbnb is not alone because you get the same when you read about Snap Inc.'s decision to lay off 20 product managers to "speed up decision-making process" (🔗 link to this story in the comments). I'm not sure reverting to a waterfall-ish functional organisation model with the CEO centralising decisions and getting involved in the details is the right answer to these. Feels to me we're going backwards instead of trying alternative ways to solve the problems we currently face in the industry and the profession.

VP of Product Design at Meta taught me about managing 👇 There are three things managers should think about all day: 🟢 Purpose [WHY] — the outcome your team is trying to accomplish, otherwise known as the why. Why do you wake up and choose to do this thing instead of the thousands of other things you could be doing? Why pour your time and energy into this particular goal with this particular group of poeple? Everyone o the team should have a similar picture of “why does our work matter?” 🟢 People [WHO] — Are the members of your team set up to succeed? Do they have the right skills? Are they motivated to do great work? 🟢 Process [HOW] — How your team works together. You might have a superbly talented team with a very clear understanding of what the end goal is, but if it’s not apparent how everyone’s supposed to work together, simple tasks can get enormously complicated. 🔴Which one is the hardest part? #business #entrpreneurship #leadership

Become invaluable, not indispensable. The advice in this article is good if you don't carry it too far. Taking on less glamorous tasks makes you valuable and builds trust and credibility. But if you become indispensable, you will find yourself on the outside, and others will get to work on the more visible activities. The two most important lessons I learned at Google were: 1️⃣ Collaboration without ego This will lead to developing incredible products. Being open to ideas that may change your vision, product, and/or audience will allow you the opportunity to create a bigger impact. 2️⃣ Celebrate the success of others, rather than your own Give credit to your team, your manager, stakeholders, etc. When you are genuine and share appreciation for others, they will do the same for you. #leadership #team #collaboration #employeedevelopment #google
