Great synopsis by Sightline Climate (CTVC) on the challenging #ClimateTech funding environment in 2023 and the potential implications in 2024 of falling interest rates, new policy incentives and regulation, and international competition to attract climate technologies start-ups and projects for both pilots and large-scale deployment of new infrastructure. Few "highlights" from 2023 below: 💰 2023 Investment: Funding in 2023 totaled $32bn, down 30% YoY, although CAGR remains high since 2020 at 23%. 🤝 Deal Count: Overall deal activity decreased for the first time since 2020, with deal count down 3% YoY. 📉 Late Stage: Growth investment fell 41% and Series C fell 35%, with deal counts for both down about 30%. 📈 Early Stage: Seed & Series A deal activity tapered, marking the first decline in Series A deal count, down 11%. 💸 Round Size: Average deal size decreased 28%, propped up in part by #megadeals, with the 10 largest deals representing ~24% of total climate investment in 2023.   🚗 Verticals: Transport & Energy fell, but remained on top. Food & Land Use fell dramatically, down -55%, and was replaced by Industry. 💤 Fewer Repeat Investors: The number of investors who have done 5+ climate deals in 2023 slumped 25% compared to last year. ⛏ Focus on #HardTech: Capital-intensive ‘physical’ climate tech companies made up ~50% of deal activity. Despite traditional venture’s focus on SaaS and asset-light business models, half of the deal activity went to towards physical assets such as #hardware, #deeptech, #biotech, #consumables, and #infrastructure. 🎉 Cumulative: Since the start of 2020, ~2,600 climate tech companies have raised $142bn+ of venture funding across 4,156 deals. Investor focus on climate tech has not only been driven through an ESG lens, but also a commercial one. "The magnitude of the opportunity is as big as we could imagine," says Marc van den Berg, global managing director of investments at Climate Investment. "Almost every industry - from mobility, chemical production and agriculture to energy production and storage - is ripe for change. Curious about the driving forces behind Europe's green revolution? After diving into European climate unicorns in my recent posts, I couldn't resist taking a closer look at the most active European climate-focused VCs of 2023. Here is what I found: 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬: The United Kingdom is leading the charge in the number of climate-focused VCs, closely trailed by Germany and BeNeLux. Switzerland and the Nordics are also punching above their weight with a remarkable number of highly active VCs, despite their smaller scale. 📍 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲: Looking at the # of investments so far in 2023, there are many VCs with 1-4 investments in 2023 so far. This isn't surprising, considering the sector's slowdown and the smaller fund sizes of many specialized VCs. However, a couple of VCs have left a significant mark. Katapult and Breakthrough Energy , for instance, have each already recorded over 20 investments so far this year. 📈 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬: While all of these VCs are dedicated to climate ventures, there's a rising trend of them honing in on specific verticals within the climate sphere, such as Energy (e.g., Future Energy Ventures, EIT InnoEnergy, SET Ventures), Food & Agriculture (e.g., Beyond Impact, Blue Horizon), Circularity (European Circular Bioeconomy Fund (ECBF), Circularity Capital), or Carbon (e.g., Carbon Removal Partners, Counteract). 🌱 𝘕𝘰𝘵𝘦: 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵 𝘝𝘊𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘴 𝘮𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴, 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦, 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵. We covered: 1: The importance of an interdisciplinary team: to be the right partner to climate founders, you need great operators, scientists, policy-experts and investors working closely together 2: The funding gap in Europe: There is a lot of capital at angel/pre-seed stage, and also for companies looking for raise $50m+, but a big gap in between 3: The opportunity in areas beyond co2: The water and biodiversity markets are growing rapidly. Now is the time to build companies that will define what those verticals will look like for decades to come. The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) launch this week is clear evidence that nature is becoming top of mind for corporates, investors and regulators A big thank you as well to David at Phase Biolabs for sharing the founder perspective!

Great read from Bloomberg columnist Coco Liu on the current state of private climate markets. "Funding from venture capitalists and private equity firms increased by nearly 63% in the third quarter from $10.2 billion raised in the previous quarter, despite a widespread fear of an investment downturn. But the past three months also saw record-low deal volume, with a total of 241 investments." The flight to quality is very real in private markets, and climate tech is no exception. In a risk-off environment, investors look to put capital behind seasoned executives operating companies with impressive financials. This week's Energy Exemplar deal is a great example of this trend. I suspect we'll see it continue for at least the next 24 months, but it's one I hope lasts a lot longer as quality assets will ultimately determine the success of our sector. #climatetech #venturecapital #privateequity #energytransition
