Thinking about making a career leap? I know you're risk averse (I am too) EVERYONE is. Human nature is designed to protect us. So why are some people better risk takers than others? They view risk differently. We view things as risky when they seem "unsafe" to us. If you've snowboarded your whole life, it's totally safe. I can cruise down a mountain of fresh powder, no problem. But if you've never strapped your feet to a board to surf down a massive rock covered in frozen water, it sounds positively terrifying. What is safe to one person is unsafe to another. On the edge of our comfort zone, we see our next moves as "risky" because they are unfamiliar to us... and unfamiliar = unsafe. When you want to spur change, make this shift: ✨ View staying stagnant as the greater risk ✨ Until you do this, you will not pursue change. Embrace the temporary discomfort as a sign to move toward growth rather than retreat (this is called entering your growth zone) What about your next move is "risky"? - Assess why it feels that way - Adjust your view of the imagined risk - Take steps to mitigate the tangible risks Has your relationship to risk evolved over time? P.S. Follow along to break through the beliefs holding you back from your greatest potential & build your career by design.

Some of the "risky" moves I've made: - Quit consulting for an early stage startup - Started a business using my personal brand - Left steady paycheck to focus on that business - Invested BIG into myself, before I had the results - Moved to South America without speaking Spanish - Does skydiving, scuba, and cliff jumping count? 🙃 I've grown so much more from taking risks that stretch me than playing it safe. How about you?

So true, Katy. Reminds me of the quote, "The biggest risk is not taking any risk... In a world that is changing really quickly, the only strategy that is guaranteed to fail is not taking risks." – Mark Zuckerberg

Risk is relative. And the more you take, the more tolerance you build, too.

This reframing of risk is SO helpful,Katy Culver Especially for us risk-averse folks who tend to see any change as a potential avalanche (even if it's just metaphorical snow!).

We all have that instinct to protect ourselves. But what sets apart those who are successful risk takers is how they view risk. Take a step back and think about why your next move seems risky to you. Embrace the discomfort as a sign of growth and take steps to mitigate any tangible risks you may face.
