Did you know that Leadenhall Market dates back over 700 years? 👇 📅 1st Century AD The first Forum at Leadenhall dates from about 70 AD, but was rebuilt in around 100 AD to be the largest Basilica Forum north of the Alps – occupying an area bigger than that of Trafalgar Square. 📅 1321 The market became a popular meeting place for poulterers and stood in approximately the north-west quadrant of the existing market site. 📅 1600 By 1600, the market included sellers of poultry, grain, eggs, butter, cheese, foodstuffs, wool, leather, and cutlery. It was the most important market in medieval and early modern London, especially for meat and poultry. 📅 1800 In the 19th century, the hide and meat market with its ‘crowded and unruly’ stalls were incompatible with the financial city and the City Architect, Sir Horace Jones, was instructed to design a ‘respectable arcade’ for the poultry market. 📅 1900 In the 1970s around fifty tons of poultry per week passed through the market, with the amount becoming unquantifiable over the festive period. Most of the units were occupied by butchers, poulterers, fishmongers and grocers. 📅 Today Today, Leadenhall Market continues to provide a wide range of shopping and dining options to its visitors. Construction on Camden Park continues as this aerial view shows progress on the food and beverage pavilion, which will be the home of the onsite restaurant, Sunday Press. Sunday Press, will be patterned after a similar concept in Oak Forest. The restaurant will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner — offering counter-service with a menu designed to appeal to those living and working nearby. They curate healthy food options, fresh baked goods, daily brunch and house-made syrups for a full coffee experience. There will be air-conditioned, indoor seating at Sunday Press, in addition to outdoor seating. Sunday Press will offer a wine and beer menu, allowing adults to take their food and beverages upstairs to the covered sky terrace.
