Katie Birkel’s Post

Global creative growth leader.

As June wraps up, it’s also time for me to close one of the most meaningful chapters of my career—and in some ways, my life, given the colleagues who’ve turned into lifelong friends and all ways I changed over the course of a work life. I’m moving on after six incredible years at Huge. When I walked in the door for my first interview at 45 Main Street after dodging all the influencers taking pictures of DUMBO, I immediately knew it was a special place, and that I wanted to work alongside the brilliant designers, makers and storytellers—and to sketch things out…hopefully not with a Sharpe…on the limitless whiteboards painted on the wall every room. To say I encountered a learning curve shifting myself into a digital-first, product and technology-driven growth role is an understatement; I continued being challenged, learning and evolving up until my last day. But I was lucky enough to do it while constantly feeling inspired by what we made together. It was six years full of change, from leadership and our offering, to global structure and brand narrative. I learned to embrace the change, and the challenges that come with it. I wrote hundreds of Hello letters for pitch submissions and held the final editing pen on countless presentations. I benefitted from one of the best-operated BD teams I’ll ever get to work with, and rebuilt systems to fit a new organization. I became a better designer soaking in the work and ways to visualize and express it (Huge is the best deck template I’ll ever use. IYKYK.) Beyond pitching, though there was plenty of that, there was building from scratch, learning how market an agency…and a swift uptake of my ability to read between the lines on Slack emoji. Hugers are masters of custom emoji. While there are too many people both still at Huge and in their own next chapter for me to thank individually (and at the risk of being played off the digital stage and/or creating a list resembling an influencer’s posting hashtags), I do have two very special shout-outs. To Matt Weiss for seeing something in me and guiding my career for six years (and being my first text most work mornings), and to Justin Wallace, the Lennon to my McCartney, for never once not picking up what I put down and giving me the advice I needed to Get Huge. Here’s to what’s next (I’ll post that soon!), and to everything that got me there. Thank you, Huge

I've never seen anyone give an update in an all hands meeting with such precision and speed while making it seem off the cuff, natural and compelling. From our first meeting during my days as a coordinator setting up your meetings, you always treated me as an equal member of the team, which meant so much to me. I wish you all the best.

I cannot believe it Katie! It's the end of an era. Huge brought us into each other's lives (at Orientation on my 2nd tour of duty and your 1st) and we became fast partners-in-crime :-) I can't imagine what those pitches would've been like without you. And I'm so happy for you as you move on to your next chapter. Can't wait to see what's next.
