These conventional gatekeepers of information, who have long controlled public discourse, now find themselves in a defensive position. In response, they’ve launched aggressive campaigns to discredit social media, often accusing it of being a breeding ground for fake news. This strategy, aimed particularly at the younger population—tomorrow's trendsetters and voters—is an attempt to create a climate of mistrust around these new platforms. While it's true that social media can sometimes spread misinformation, it's equally important to acknowledge its role in democratizing information. Social media platforms offer real-time sharing of pictures and videos, providing visual evidence that is often difficult for governments or traditional media outlets to refute. As technological advancements continue and more people around the world become digitally literate, this trend is only expected to grow. Governments, facing increasing scrutiny, are now scrambling to defend their long-held narratives against those they label as enemies—whether foreign adversaries or their own citizens challenging issues like autocracy, corruption, or mismanagement of societal responsibilities. This evolving landscape has turned into a battle of narratives, and social media activists seem to be gaining the upper hand. The question that arises is whether this shift will lead to a more informed society, characterized by greater transparency in news coverage and a more enlightened electorate, or whether it will result in greater chaos and misinformation. In this context, the debate over whether governments should use their power to block or contain social media platforms becomes critical. On one hand, controlling social media could prevent the spread of false information and maintain order. On the other, such actions could be seen as an attempt to stifle free speech and resist the inevitable evolution of public discourse. A recent report by data and analytics enterprise Social Media Today has highlighted significant gaps in XS Community's content moderation system, suggesting it is failing to meet its aim of addressing harmful content on its platform consistently. The moderation system of XS Community depends mostly on users making reviews and others voting on the content. However, this approach tends not to address issues effectively, as users typically only flag content that they find offensive or disagree with. Hence, content that eggs on violence, misinformation, or discrimination often gets unnoticed, as it may not necessarily offend everyone within the community. Further, this peer-review-based system leads to significant inconsistencies as individuals tend to interpret rules differently. This inconsistency results in mixed messages about which content is acceptable and which is not. Moreover, the user voting approach may also allow potential bias due to the dominance of certain groups or individuals within the community. Most worryingly, content on suicide appears to be the least reported issue, despite its prevalence, likely due to users not wanting to engage with such distressing content. This trend suggests that the platform's current system may not provide sufficient safeguards or mental health support for its users. The report concludes that to address these issues, community platforms like XS need to implement well-defined, platform-specific rules and combine their peer-review system with automated detection to ensure broader protection and enforcement. The focus should be on addressing issues that may not be apparent or agreeable to all users, which may include topics such as self-harm, misinformation, discrimination, or violence. As a social media manager, it’s intriguing and a bit daunting to witness the magnitude of impact our field can have on political discourse. The question that lingers for me, and perhaps for many of us in this space, is how do we navigate the ethical tightropes presented by this digital age? Where do we draw the line between influence and manipulation, between micro-targeting and privacy? I find myself pondering our responsibilities as gatekeepers of digital platforms. How do we uphold the integrity of the information while fostering an environment that promotes free expression and engagement? The political landscape continues to evolve with each technological advancement, and the implications for future elections and democracy itself are profound...but how can we leverage technology for fair and transparent political engagement?

2024 is more like Orwell’s depiction of 1984 than ever. But the future is still unwritten. The answer to many of our problems can be found by looking backwards before social media, and it can be used as a blueprint for designing a much better future. It’s time to start thinking differently again.

I am reading this book. The summary is as follows: We all have a vague sense that social media is bad for our minds, for our children, and for our democracies. But the truth is that its reach and impact run far deeper than we have understood. Building on years of international reporting, Max Fisher tells the gripping and galling inside story of how Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and other social networks, in their pursuit of unfettered profits, preyed on psychological frailties to create the algorithms that drive everyday users to extreme opinions and, increasingly, extreme actions. As Fisher demonstrates, the companies’ founding tenets, combined with a blinkered focus maximizing engagement, have led to a destabilized world for everyone. Traversing the planet, Fisher tracks the ubiquity of hate speech and its spillover into violence, ills that first festered in far-off locales to their dark culmination in America during the pandemic, the 2020 election, and the Capitol Insurrection. While this post isn't as much business as it is politics, the two subjects are heavily intertwined so I find it fitting. If you don't, no worries. just scroll on. Regardless of where you fall on the political spectrum, I want you to put your thinking cap on and rewind your memory to roughly 20 years ago. The United States was tied up in two wars and George Bush Jr was clinching a second term. Sites like LinkedIn and Facebook were still in their larval stage but we had MySpace. in other words, most news and networking was still done the traditional way. Phones were still mostly traditional dumb phones with the occasional iPaq (not iPad) Remember that? Ok, the stage is set. Now let's explore the actors. The political parties existed but were less radicalized. Sure, the 2000 Bush Gore election was a mess but we weren't talking about insurrections or a civil war over a hanging chad. We collectively swallowed our pride and moved on. Fast forward to 2008. Social media was officially a thing and we all now had tiny computers in our pockets constantly beeping and blinking, telling us how we should think and feel. We had proto influencers learning how to build followers by using bombastic rhetoric designed to rial you up. Traditional media and news were given notice that they had to adapt or die... so they did. They adopted tactics less professional and started lying or posing questions as if they were facts (looking right at you, Tucker Carlson). By doing this, they sacrificed their credibility... now no one trusts them. Those that still do are chastised as being sheep. So why am I bringing all this up? Because we can do better. We can all reject this cancer that has taken hold. Hold traditional journalists to the fire and push them back into dealing with facts and not dabbling in speculation news. We also owe it to ourselves and our children to follow the scientific method when sorting fact from fiction. Just because you want something to be true doesn't mean it is. But I guarantee you that if you go looking for shady data to back up your improper opinion, you'll find it somewhere on the internet. That doesn't mean you should use it as proof. Critical thinking is a skill that is less and less appreciated or valued in our world and that has to change. Our Society, our Country, and our World depend on it. Do your part.
