🌟 Empowering #GirlsWhoGame at #ISTELive24! 🌟 We had two inspiring sessions on "Girls Who Game" at the ISTE conference. The panel session was all about supporting underserved groups in the gaming community and fostering connections to build a vibrant learning community. 🎮✨ Thanks to Andrea Wright, Paige Johnson (she/her) Nekia Becerra, Ph.D. and @chris_key The second session covered the incredible impact of gaming on girls and how it can open up new avenues for learning and growth. Here are the three levels of our program: 🏅 Level 1 - Challenge: Introducing girls to gaming with Minecraft Education with exciting challenges linked to the UNSDG Health Partnership that spark interest and creativity. 🌱 Level 2 - Jr. Mentors and Leadership: Developing leadership skills and mentorship opportunities to empower the next generation of female STEM gamers. 🚀 Level 3 - STEM Esports: Integrating STEM education with esports, providing a holistic approach to learning and gaming. The networking session also connected participants, who shared experiences, and laid the groundwork for a supportive learning community. It was heartening to see the enthusiasm and dedication towards creating inclusive spaces in gaming. Let's continue to champion diversity, inclusion, and empowerment in the gaming world. Together, we can inspire and support girls to pursue their passions and excel in STEM and esports! 🌟 #ISTE #GirlsWhoGame #GamingInEducation #DiversityAndInclusion #STEM #Empowerment #EducationInnovation #Iwork4Dell Dennis Hofmann

Gaming, including esports, attracts a diverse group of students, irrespective of their race, gender and ability. It has effectively encouraged young people to pursue STEM education and related careers. I believe this trend of educators using gaming (incl. gamified tools/software) and esports to guide more students into STEM fields will continue to grow in the coming years. It's worth noting that Malaysia reported nearly 15,000 students opting out of the national SPM exam in 2022. A study conducted by the National STEM Association (NSA) revealed that only 19% of students have been choosing science subjects since 2020. Shockingly, interest in science among students has plummeted from 66.7% in 2019 to 40% in 2022. This is a deeply concerning trend. Our younger generation represents our hope for the future. The question remains: where have these 15,000 dropouts gone? Have they pursued careers as streamers, TikTokers, influencers, or content creators? Just my 2 cents. 😊
Students are using video games and esports to unlock their interests in technology and STEM fields. Games provide a stepping stone for the leaders of tomorrow to pursue careers and futures in leading industries while creating more equitable access to these opportunities. “Esports attracts a diverse group of students, regardless of race or gender, and it has proven itself as a gateway into encouraging young people to pursue STEM education as well as STEM-related careers,” said Pennsylvania House Rep. Danilo Burgos. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eBbiPczh #Esports #STEM #EdTech #PositivePlay

Esports in Education | Connecting Gamers with Collegiate Programs 🌍 | Author 📖 | University Lecturer 🎓
In recent years, the integration of esports and gaming in higher education has become a pivotal force in steering students toward STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields. Notably, colleges like Rowan University have embraced this trend, recognizing the broader educational benefits beyond esports competition. 📚 Esports facilities on campuses serve as more than just practice spaces for teams; they've become gateways to STEM careers. These platforms prepare students for a multitude of future roles, from audio and esports production to cybersecurity. Moreover, the emphasis on diversity in STEM is reinforced by esports, as it attracts a varied student body. Gaming provides a bridge to STEM for underrepresented groups, potentially remedying the lack of diversity in these fields. Educators and universities are increasingly turning to esports to pave the way for students toward STEM education and careers. This promising trend is set to gain momentum in the years to come.

Another great story of impact: Mashfiq Ahmed, a passionate high school teacher in Brooklyn, New York, introduced a virtual Minecraft Club during the pandemic to engage remote students and nurture their social-emotional growth. Little did he know, this would mark the start of something truly remarkable. At the heart of this journey lies the transformative potential of gaming and Esports in education, equipping students with crucial skills, from problem-solving and creativity to teamwork and adaptability. This approach aims to boost their confidence and unlock exciting pathways to careers within the gaming industry. Ahmed's advice to fellow educators is clear: “You don’t have to know everything about video games and game design to teach this to students. I guarantee that in your classroom, there's one kid who's obsessed with them. Leverage that student’s expertise, let them become the teacher and have them guide the class. It’s a win for everybody.” In collaboration with Games for Change, a nonprofit that empowers people to drive social change through gaming, Verizon Innovative Learning HQ offers two professional development courses: "Introduction to Games and Learning" and "Esports: The What, Why, and How."
