What projects or teams catch your eye? ☕ Network: Have coffee chats with colleagues in other areas, attend internal events, and let your interest be known. ✨ Polish: Update your resume and LinkedIn, and be ready to showcase your achievements and how they align with your desired role. 📩 Apply: Express your interest to your manager, and look out for internal job postings. I arrived in Canada back in 2021,feeling completely alone, far from friends and family. It was daunting, but I was determined to make it work. Networking Insight: I quickly learned the power of active listening. By genuinely listening to others, I not only gained valuable insights but also formed genuine connections that made me feel less isolated. Crafting an Elevator Pitch: Crafting my elevator pitch was a game-changer. It helped me confidently introduce myself and share my story, despite the initial uncertainty. Networking Events: Attending networking events became my lifeline. From industry seminars to career fairs, these gatherings introduced me to professionals who offered advice, guidance, and sometimes even friendship. Career Progression: Through networking, I secured part-time work on campus, which provided much-needed stability. This led to internships that expanded my skills and eventually a full-time job that aligned with my career aspirations. Personal Growth: Beyond professional success, networking helped me build a support system in Canada. I found mentors who believed in me and colleagues who became friends, making Canada feel more like home. Through networking, I didn't just find job opportunities—I found a community that supported me through the challenges of starting fresh in a new country. #networking #activelistening #careerfairs #elevatorpitch

After traveling for a month in #Germany, I've realized that #Germans are much more approachable than they might seem at first glance. I've had numerous meaningful conversations and made delightful connections that significantly enriched my travels. Here are my top three ways to build connections in Germany: 🚃🚃🚃Be Ready to Initiate a Conversation on Trains This is my top recommendation for connecting with people in Germany. I've had many pleasant surprises from chatting with fellow passengers. These random conversations led me to an exhibition in Hamburg, a riverside picnic in Augsburg, an unexpected visit to Landshut, a fun stop in Freising to check out a local bar and meet Marie again, and even learning about an interesting company I hadn't heard of before. My general impression is that people in the south tend to be more open to conversations on trains than those in the north. 🎪🎪🎪Be Curious and Ask Questions at Trade Shows Trade shows are a tradition in Germany. Maybe because of that they are very welcoming to individual visitors. Many offer affordable one-day passes, some will keep the early bird rate until the day before the event. Some, like the Berlin Airshow (ILA), provides free tours in case you do not know where to start. I learned the most by simply asking questions and being curious. On top of space and satellites that I learned and shared on LinkedIn before, I also had meaningful chats with a German Armed Forces officer, a student glider club, and an artist drawing future airplanes. It really offered a wealth of opportunities for connection. 🎡🎡🎡Attend Job Fairs to Discover Lesser-Known Companies Job fairs in Germany are often free if you register online in advance. Even if the websites are in German, tools like auto-translation make registration easy. At a job fair in Munich, I discovered several interesting companies open to English-speaking candidates due to their international expansion. While most companies focus on the domestic market and require German fluency, engaging with their staff purely for connection was rewarding. Not mentioning, at job fair, you got interesting goodies. For example, I picked up a bottle opener at the job fair which is a survival tool for Germany in my opinion. 🔮🔮🔮Bonus Tip: Utilize LinkedIn for Reconnections While LinkedIn might not be the most efficient way to connect with new people in Germany (which is not the case for the Netherlands), it's great for reconnecting with former classmates and colleagues. For instance, I reconnected with former classmates from SciencesPo and ex-colleagues from NGOs via LinkedIn. Always check your LinkedIn connections when traveling to a new country. Now, I'm in #Austria for two weeks and eager to see what connections await. Ready for more meaningful conversations, one interaction at a time!
