My career journey sometimes doesn't make sense to people — can I be a journalist if I'm also a recruiter? How could education reporting and writing a young adult book about teen activists prepare me to work with organizations and job candidates to match them and improve workplaces? Last week I was lucky to participate in a two-day seminar that helped me better answer that question, and convert the observations I learned as a reporter covering schools, into skills I can use to build community among adults. The California Conference for Equality and Justice (CCEJ) training prepares folks to facilitate community-building restorative justice practices in their work, whether with children or adults. Now I help people in newsrooms and other organizations improve their relationships with hiring and with each other, and I often think of the schools I covered. We encourage organizations to commit their time and resources to organizational and people development, which includes building community with one another — that's an important factor to people staying at a company and remaining fulfilled in their roles. My interest in restorative justice practices stems back to my coverage of how it is used in schools and social movements. Through my reporting for the LA Times and my book, I learned how it's not just about trying to find an alternative to suspensions, expulsions or criminal charges after harm takes place, but rather about building relationships so that a community can move through and survive conflict. The process requires a commitment and persistence and is successful when a school, school system or group of people commit the time, resources and consistency to building those relationships in the long term. This is all to say, your career and life experiences have created intersections in thought and expertise that are specific to you — I hope you explore and are able to expand your learning to allow them to meet. Seeing the potential in every student comes from nearly two decades hiring a wide range of talent across all career clusters. Very quickly I learned that the way people learn and their success in school wasn’t predictive of their ability to be successful in the world of work or other life roles. Transitions, or maybe the new chapters in our lives, play an important role in our growth. Aligning and realigning our strengths, interests, and values during transitions allows us to test, practice and renew our brands and grow into our best possible selves. Not unlike work transitions, students face some of the earliest career-like transitions, as they move from: 5th-6th, 8th-9th, and 12th to post-secondary/career. What an opportunity we have in #K12 to provide the practical skills, knowledge, and coaching to help Ss navigate those early life roles in a way that builds for smoother transitions later on.
