Recently, I attended a fireside chat in which the moderator asked the panelists how leadership would change with the disruptions brought by AI. This got me to reflect on the delta in leadership required in today’s AI world. To assist me in my reflection, I revisited my blog written two years ago on “Framework of the Work of a Leader”. My key takeaway is that while the work of a leader will not change fundamentally, there are certain areas that demand greater attention from the leader. In particular, Leading Change stands out: 1. Anticipate Change Leaders should explore and analyze the driving forces that can either disrupt their current operating model or create opportunities for growth. AI is a major driving force today: since the launch of ChatGPT in Nov 2022, we have seen tech providers releasing many new capabilities in a rapid pace, and best practices in adopting them have changed as well. - Leaders need to gain a fundamental understanding of, and stay up-to-date with, AI technologies. While one doesn’t need to be a tech expert, having a good grasp of the possibilities and limitations of AI is crucial for making informed decisions. - Leaders need to study how others, from tech vendors to competitors to customers, are approaching AI adoption, and assess how their use cases and their practices might be relevant for us. 2. Set Shared Vision and Strategy It is crucial to ensure that the process of setting a shared vision and strategy is collaborative, which can be extremely challenging in the rapidly changing AI landscape, . - Leaders need to embrace a learning mindset, and be willing to admit when answers are lacking. A critical tool is hands-on experimentation projects, in which the outputs provide valuable inputs for strategy formulation. - Leaders need to double down on engagement and communication with stakeholders; these are to gather inputs and feedback, as well as to provide a common understanding of the leader's intent. 3. Establish the Enabling Systems Change management is a continuous and challenging endeavor, further complicated by the anxiety due to the uncertainty surrounding the impact of AI. It is essential to implement the necessary enabling systems for change to succeed in a sustainable way. - Leaders need to implement a structured AI training and upskilling program to promote AI literacy and proficiency in the organization. People fear what they don’t understand, and such a program will work towards fostering the willingness and ability to embrace new AI developments. - Leaders need to empower teams so that they have the autonomy to incorporate AI into their daily work, whether it be automating routine tasks or exploring new possibilities with AI. McKinsey & Company released a report in June that predicted up to $4.4 trillion in productivity gains could be added annually to the global economy via the use of generative AI. For many organizational leaders, the big question is "how do I actually use AI?". The report goes deeper to state that 60-70% of employee time is used on tasks that can be completed with a combination of AI and automation. The most automatable work identified revolved around service-oriented operational processes. At UiPath, we all love the "brain and muscle" analogy. AI is a brain that can think and use reason - automation is the muscle that actually does work. An actual challenge we discuss very regularly: "We have an email inbox that we monitor for service requests. When we get a request, we then designate the task to somebody to do the work, and then report that the task is complete to the end user. The process takes a lot of time, it isn't engaging for the employee doing it, and we have a massive backlog." Our solution: - Use an AI tool to monitor the inbox - The AI will decipher what work needs to be done based off of the email - An automation will be triggered to do the work - All reporting is then done automatically, and an email is sent to the end user So for business leaders asking the question of how, know that a successful AI strategy often involves a successful automation strategy. Generative AI is revolutionising the way we operate and is a pivotal tool for the future of enterprises. Nevertheless, numerous leaders feel ill-equipped to employ AI and evaluate its long-term consequences. A study by Russell Reynolds Associates reveals that only 32% of leaders are confident in their capacity to integrate AI into their organisations.
