😎 😎 Summer is around the corner! It’s time to enjoy lovely sunshine under beaches, and have outdoor fun with family and friends. Yet, I am a bit scared to be exposed to the sun lately due to the extremely high temperature that causes headaches and sunburn. Yes, the global weather has gone too extreme in recent years. 🔥 🔥 Is global warming getting worse in 2024? Carbon Brief's projection suggests that 2024 is virtually certainly the warmest or second-warmest year on record, with a central estimate just above 1.5C, slightly higher than 2023. Zeke Hausfather, a climate scientist, estimates a 66% chance that 2024 will be the hottest year on record and a 99% chance it will be the second hottest. ⚡ ⚡ How will global warming impact us? Sea levels are rising and oceans are becoming warmer. Longer, more intense droughts threaten crops, wildlife, and freshwater supplies. From polar bears in the Arctic to marine turtles off the coast of Africa, our planet's diversity of life is at risk from the changing climate. 🔙 🔙 Is it too late to make a U-turn to the climate change? While the effects of human activities on Earth's climate to date are irreversible on the timescale of humans alive today, every little bit of avoided future temperature increases results in less warming that would otherwise persist for essentially forever. 🌏 🌏 Are you keen to know more about the causes and impact of climate change? What do cities of Sydney, London, Kitakyushu and Norfolk have in common? Well... They do care about Climate Change and they all are participating in the ESRI Growing Green Cities collaboration. And well done City of Sydney for your Greening Sydney Strategy, Urban Forest Strategy and Street Tree Master Plan. The summer of 2023 is set to deliver the hottest temperatures on record – making Australia one of the warmest places on Earth. Global heating is occurring faster in Australia than anywhere else in the world — its average surface temperature has already increased more than 1.4ºC since 1910. Like other urban areas, Sydney’s buildings, roads, and footpaths create heat islands by absorbing heat during the day and releasing it at night. Mapping it out is incredibly insightful. When you start to visualise that type of data, it is impossible not to want to become a game changer. #WorldCitiesDay2023 focuses on financing a sustainable urban future for all. Cities generate more than two-thirds of global #GreenhouseGasEmissions, which includes what is emitted in them & what arrives from elsewhere. IPCC's 2022 #ClimateReport on climate change mitigation found that better urban planning has significant potential to reduce emissions in all cities. Three other broad strategies can also be effective: 📗 Sustainable production & consumption of goods & services. 🔌 Electrification 🌲 Improving carbon uptake and storage, e.g. permeable surfaces, green roofs, trees and lakes.
