Uber announced a partnership between robotics firm Cartken and Japanese industrial titan Mitsubishi Electric to launch autonomous sidewalk robots that will start delivering Eats orders in parts of Tokyo beginning next month. Japan will be the first international market to have autonomous delivery available on the Uber Eats platform🇯🇵 Cartken’s Model C robots use AI and computer vision technologies to navigate their environments. The sidewalk-traversing robots are designed to avoid obstacles, yield to pedestrians, and stop at traffic lights. They travel at roughly the same speed as a walking adult and are fitted with a cargo bin that is designed to keep food at an appropriate temperature during transport. 🤖 Uber, in collaboration with Mitsubishi Corporation and autonomous robotics startup Cartken, is set to launch a food delivery service in Tokyo by the end of March, utilizing self-driving sidewalk robots called Model C.    🤖 The partnership extends beyond U.S. borders, marking a significant expansion for Uber and Cartken, which already jointly operate a delivery service in Virginia and Miami. Mitsubishi Electric will oversee operations in Tokyo, emphasizing the global scope of the initiative. 🤖 Cartken's Model C robot boasts a 27-liter cargo bin and a speed of 3.3 miles per hour, equipped with sensors and advanced software for environment detection and navigation. Serve Robotics Inc. has announced that Shake Shack is now using its autonomous robots for deliveries in the Los Angeles area, specifically in the West Hollywood/Koreatown region. Uber Eats customers can choose to have their Shake Shack orders delivered by robots through the Uber Eats app, where the "robot" delivery option is available. Serve Robotics, which has been operating robotic deliveries in LA since 2022, is expanding its services across the U.S. and aims to deploy 2,000 robots by the end of 2025. The company is using $40 million from its recent IPO to grow its fleet and support teams. Additionally, Serve raised $15 million in a private placement to further its expansion efforts. This marks the first commercial deal Figure has signed since it was founded in 2022. While the company didn't disclose how many robots BMW will be using, the partnership will start with small quantities and expand if performance targets have been met. Self-driving sidewalk robots will be used by Uber, its partners Mitsubishi Electric and the autonomous robotics firm #Cartken, to serve meals to consumers in Japan. The services provided by the Uber Eats app will be live by the end of March in a few areas of Tokyo, according to the #announcements made by the firms. Operating hours will be announced closer to the start date, an Uber representative stated. Together, Uber and Cartken, a 2019 business created by the former Google #developers behind the brief Bookbot, provide a delivery service in Fairfax, Virginia, as well as Miami. Their first venture outside of the US is this most recent arrangement. It also includes Mitsubishi Electric, a business that will oversee #Tokyo operations. The delivery service will be handled by Model C, Cartken's autonomous sidewalk robot. The robot moves at a speed of around 3.3 miles per hour and is equipped with an insulated 27-liter payload bag. The robot has a ton of #sensors, including cameras and sophisticated algorithms, which enable it to sense, identify, and eventually navigate its surroundings. Additionally, Cartken includes a mechanism that lets employees see and control the robot from a distance if necessary. According to an Uber representative, Mitsubishi #Electric staff members who have received training in Cartken's remote guiding system will utilize the teleoperations interface. Robot delivery is an #efficient solution to the logistical dilemma, which will only become worse in the future, according to Shoji Tanaka, senior general manager of Mitsubishi Electric's advanced application research center. "Our aspiration is that the recently revealed endeavor will function as a spur for the #proliferation of robotic delivery services throughout Japan," stated Tanaka.
