Every so often on Google Trends "CVS and Walgreens the same" will have a sudden search spike. 🤔 People are noticing that these two pharmacies are close to each other - so much so that they're even searching the phrase "are CVS and Walgreens owned by the same company?" The confusion doesn't come from an unfounded place. The placement of these two pharmacy giants' stores is entirely purposeful and designed to maximise the number of visitors - heightened competition or no! People ask how on earth these big retailers go broke ?! here is the answer: 1. they don't operate for care which will lead to profit , they operate purely for the "profit now concept"(it is not in a CEO dictionary to go long term plans because their contracts are very short and they want to make the biggest amount of bonuses in few years ) 2. they cut expenses at the bottom = less patient care ,more burnout , extremely high turnover and consequences are known . 3. they rely on deals like #pbms so they can secure business unethically and crush small independent pharmacies as a way to secure volume that would keep alive for only short term ( the irony is ,it is still legal in Canada except #Quebec) 4. they inflate prices of medicine in thier supply chain and they charge more for insurance ( who they have deals with already ) and the patient is the one paying for all this from their premiums . 5. they convince officials that they can do more for less leading to extremely wrong decisions for reimbursement that kill more pharmacies because the cost of filling is way more than what these companies claim they can afford the business 6. when they reach a stage that they don't make same amount of money , they close many branches and by this they not only killed competition but also shoot themselvs in the foot. it is about greed and control not about #patientcare , and the #public as well the #profession are the loosers in this . that is why #corporate pressure and #pbms are the most dangerous thing on our profession in #Ontario and in #Canada . 𝐈𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐚 𝐛𝐢𝐠 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐲? 𝐈𝐟 𝐬𝐨, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐞... CVS, the largest US chain, closed 244 stores between 2018 and 2020. In 2021, it announced plans to close 900 stores. Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy last year and will close up to 500 stores. Many patients will be losing their local pharmacy. Those living in rural areas are at a huge risk. Walgreens has said 25% of their stores are not profitable - which are more likely to close? Rural ones with fewer patients or the busiest stores in big cities. I regretfully envision a future where twenty or so pharmacists are cobbled together in some strip mall office space. The days of us being the most accessible healthcare professionals, those comforting knowledgeable faces behind the bench are long gone. Headsets and iPads are now our only connection with patients - if we can still in good conscious call them that. Walgreens and CVS have led the lobby to pass a series of legislation that has all but removed pharmacists from the prescription filling process. Burnt out technicians, with turnover rates akin to that of McDonald’s employees, are now tasked with everything. Tech-Check-Tech, immunizations, controlled substance stewardship, etc. - our only role left is to counsel. Well, not exactly. At the point of sale we flash to life on a customer facing iPad. On our end we see the name of the drug being dispensed and begin reading verbatim the language corporate has determined to be best to help them mitigate any liability for Walgreens or CVS. Those twenty pharmacists repeat the prepared counselings 1000s of times per shift and are responsible for 200 locations. I know this sounds terrible but don’t even think about complaining. Thanks to this new business model the unemployment rate for pharmacists is the highest in modern recorded history and the chains are more powerful than ever. First, it is not about pay. Done that. Talked about it. Stop making us greedy. Secondly, if communications between team members memberships and management was as effective as you claim to be, we would not be here. In fact, #PizzaIsNotWorking would not exist. Furthermore, let’s not forget that American Pharmacists Association and National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations PWWR mentions that 63% had negative experiences providing recommendations to management and 46% indicated that recommendations was not followed. So no Walgreens , if you really care about your employees and what they were facing at the store level; if you truly had an opened door policy, we would not be here.
