Have you thought about how you begin your day and how your mood could be influencing your day? Greater Good Science Centre have researched gratitude and its affects on wellbeing, happiness and mood. GGCS suggest that "gratitude inspires people to be generous, kind and helpful, strengthens relationships and may improve the climate in workplaces". Several years ago, I started spending a few minutes each day reflecting on and writing down the things that I was grateful for. After only a few days, and to my surprise, I noticed a shift in my perspective! I became increasingly aware that, despite the challenges I faced on some days, I started seeing the beauty around me and noticing an increase in positive emotions like joy, awe & happiness along with a greater sense of calm. As a consequence, I was curious about what impact gratitude could have within workplace leadership programs. At the beginning of each day I would ask "take a few minutes to reflect on and write down 3-5 things you’re grateful for". I invited everyone to share one thing they were grateful for at their tables. I wasn’t sure how people would feel about sharing something so personal? Over the course of the program, I observed increased levels of vulnerability, sharing and trust amongst the group. Physical rest is not the same as sleep or active rest, it is important for wellbeing, stabalising stress and helping us be aware of how we are communicating with people in work. People who do not take active rest are more prone to stress, stress related issues and making bad decisions based on short-term thinking! This week I have managed to (mostly) eat well and exercise daily. When I am in this mindset, I know what works best for me is to wake up and go... it sets me up for the rest of the day. But for others, they like to end their days at the gym or out for a run to wind down. So it is important to remember that what works for one, may not work for another. This concept should be applied in everything. Lifestyle, family, relationships and work. How to get others to "Play Ball"! When trying to get others to "PLAY BALL" - to work, collaborate or engage with us, as Leaders, we need to work at it, we can't just expect it!! Some ways to get others behind the vision, and work with us towards its realisation are: ⚽ Focus on clear communication ⚽ Mutual benefit ⚽ Listen to their needs ⚽ Set out clearly and transparently, the goals and expectations ⚽ Find common ground ⚽ Build trust and show respect ⚽ Crucially, invest in their Health and Wellbeing and make it a priority These are all key to fostering cooperation and achieving shared success.
