Happy Canada Day! Many Americans ask if Canada Day is similar to Independence Day in the U.S. They are similar in that both are related to gaining independence from the United Kingdom. For Canada, however, Canada Day marks only one (but one very important) milestone on the path to full independence. It took many more years for Canada to gain complete sovereignty—with the passage of the Statute of Westminster in 1931 and the final passing of the Constitution Act in 1982. Similar to the Fourth of July, Canada Day is celebrated widely, with firework displays, concerts, barbecues, patriotic parades, and celebratory festivals. The Canadian flag flies high across the country. Many people paint their faces red and white, which are Canada’s national colors. There are often citizenship ceremonies as well. The nation’s largest Canada Day celebrations typically occur in the country’s capital, Ottawa, right in front of the parliament building. What did Canada Day used to be known as pre-1983? Today, July 1st, marks the anniversary of Canada’s confederation in 1867 when three British colonies - Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada (later to become Ontario and Quebec) - united to form the 'Dominion of Canada'. Originally called ‘Dominion Day’, the holiday was renamed as ‘Canada Day’ in 1982, seen as a modern shift away from colonial-era terminology. The interesting difference between a ‘colony’ and a ‘dominion’ is that the latter has attained a degree of self-governance whilst remaining loyal - in this instance - to the ethos of the British family, or Crown. Functions of the Crown in the Dominions are not undertaken personally by the sovereign but by a governor-general, appointed by the sovereign (Oxford University Press). Mary Simon is the current governor general of Canada, and is the first Indigenous appointment to the role. She became the 30th governor general of Canada on 26th July 2021. CELEBRATIONS As with many celebrations around the world, fireworks play a central role, with people gathering in parks and waterfronts across the country to see the night skies light up. Many Canadians dress in the national colours of red & white, attending parties and cultural activities, which may include historical reenactments (Halifax) or Indigenous ceremonies (Winnipeg). According to website ‘Ramblyn Jazz’, the day brings mixed feelings amongst Indigenous cultures, due to historical injustices. Though Indigenous communities frequently do use the day to showcase their cultures and contributions to Canadian life. In Montreal, where I spent two-years, this year’s main event will be a family focussed affair in the Old Port of Montreal, which is a fun and vibrant part of the city, full of bars, restaurants and a zip wire for those feeling more daring. In addition to the main celebrations at the Old Port, various Montreal neighbourhoods organise their own Canada Day events. For example, Pierrefonds-Roxboro on the opposite shore of Montreal island, hosts a parade, amusement park, and fireworks. On Monday, we celebrate 🇨🇦 and our 157th birthday, I wanted to share what Canada Day means to me: 1. National Pride: It’s a day to celebrate Canadian culture, achievements, and values. 2. Historical Reflection: Many take the time to reflect on the history of Canada, including its founding and development over the years. 3. Cultural Diversity: Canada Day often highlights the country’s multiculturalism and the contributions of various communities. 4. Family and Community: It’s a time for gatherings, parades, fireworks, and other local/national events. 5. Acknowledgement of Indigenous Peoples: Increasingly, there’s recognition of the complex history and the need to acknowledge and reconcile with the Indigenous peoples of Canada. July 4th is famously known as American Independence Day, but the date also marks a special celebration in The Philippines. Republic Day is celebrated in The Philippines on July 4th and commemorates the day in 1946 when the Philippines ceased to be a U.S. territory and gained independence after 48 years of American rule. In 1962, President Diosdado Macapagal moved the official Independence Day celebration to June 12th, commemorating the 1898 declaration of independence from Spain. July 4th was then renamed as Republic Day in 1964. July 4th is no longer an official holiday in the Philippines, but some Filipinos still recognise its historical significance. The day is often marked by smaller-scale events or personal reflections on the country's journey to independence and its relationship with the United States. When it was recognised as an official holiday, it would be marked by formal dinners and receptions, grand fireworks in the capital Manila and elsewhere throughout the country, tree planting to symbolise independence, and a range of cultural performances such as concerts with the Manila Symphony Orchestra. Today, let's honor and respect their contributions, resilience, and ongoing struggles. Here are some ways you can celebrate Canada Day: ➡️Educate yourself on the history and current issues faced by Indigenous communities. ➡️Support Indigenous businesses, artists, artisans, and entrepreneurs. ➡️Attend Indigenous-led events. ➡️Use your voice to support policies and initiatives that aim to reconcile and improve relationships with Indigenous folks. ➡️Take time to reflect on the land we celebrate today and recognize the traditional territories and original stewards of these lands.

Today is Bastille Day, July 14th, a day that for America is … just another day.   Likewise, our 4th of July for France is … Well, it’s just another day. But, hey! We should be sharing these two holidays! They are not random, separate events. I am no historian, but in working with French expatriates on their English over the years, I have begun to appreciate our respective histories: Our July days of independence are inextricably linked. I’ve learned that without France’s help in our American Revolution, the 4th of July might be just another day for us (because we may well have lost the war.) Unimaginable, right? But America in 1776 was not ready to run a ground war. We were then just random colonies without money to even give soldiers shoes – with many fighting in bare and bloody feet, even in the bitter, pre-climate change winter. Among France’s many deeds for us: • Shoes. Patriot uniforms. Weapons, along with trained commanders and thousands of French troops. And money, lots. • Also (one tiny detail): it was the French Navy in 1782 that cornered the British at Yorktown, forcing the British surrender and end of the war -- giving America its independence. Grand merci, France! What does the US have to do with Bastille Day? Both the American and French revolutions were influenced by French Enlightenment ideals, such as liberty and equality. The American fight for freedom, historians say, was one of several things that inspired the French Revolution. On July 14, 1789, the people of Paris stormed the Bastille, an ancient, royal fortress and prison. They freed prisoners and, ultimately, freed themselves from centuries of rule by kings.
