But many organizations take a one-size-fits-all approach that falls short in reaching employees with varying concerns. By identifying different styles of learners and tailoring diversity programs to fulfill their needs, organizations can optimize training outcomes and enhance the bottom line, according to an Academy of Management Review article by Quinetta Roberson of Michigan State University, Ozias A. Moore, Ph.D. Lehigh University and Brad Bell of Cornell University. “If you spend the time to understand who employees are and address their needs as individuals through diversity training, you will see a return. People will work better. There will be better #collaboration in teams, less conflict, and more effectiveness and #efficiency,” Roberson says.

It is concerning that a nation professing to value and support its military personnel often neglects them once they complete their service. The disparity in recognition and opportunity between college graduates and military veterans is particularly troubling. While academic institutions may offer theoretical leadership training, many students struggle with basic responsibilities, such as attending classes regularly. Despite this, a college degree frequently positions an individual as a preferred candidate for leadership roles over enlisted military personnel. In the military, leadership is not just a theoretical concept but a critical, life-and-death responsibility. A leader's mistake can have dire consequences, including the loss of life. In contrast, errors in business management typically result in financial loss or inefficiencies, not the loss of human life. This discrepancy raises an important question: When did monetary value surpass the value of human life? The current hiring practices of many businesses prioritize academic credentials over practical leadership experience. This trend is evident across various industries, where companies often favor college graduates with no real-world leadership experience over military veterans who have been rigorously trained in leadership from the outset of their service. These veterans often hold extensive experience in leadership roles but are overlooked due to the lack of a college degree. Even companies that publicly commit to hiring veterans, such as Walmart, frequently offer them entry-level positions equivalent to those given to high school students. This practice undermines the valuable skills and experiences that veterans bring to the workforce. To address this issue, businesses should reevaluate their hiring criteria to better recognize and utilize the unique leadership skills of military veterans. By doing so, they can not only honor their commitment to supporting veterans but also enrich their organizations with proven, resilient leaders.

This pioneering event is designed to assist veterans in transitioning from military to civilian life, focusing on harnessing and translating their leadership skills for the civilian sector. In an era where military recruitment and retention face significant challenges, the V-TLC represents a critical initiative. The conference offers a comprehensive daylong program aimed at enabling service members to effectively translate their military experience into civilian terms, refine their interview skills, and master the art of networking. The event welcomes not only individuals transitioning from MacDill AFB but also other recently separated veterans eager to embark on a new career path.
