Nate Ubowski, who manages the Sphero Global Challenge, captures the essence of this perfectly: 'Your child wants to hang out with their friends, so give them some challenges they can work through together. I promise that they will have fun doing the mission objectives and learn a lot about how friendship and teamwork go hand in hand. Doing this competition with a group of friends also lowers the pressure as it gives peers an opportunity to build each other up and problem solve together.' This understanding of the social dynamics in STEM learning is further reinforced by findings from an October 2017 study conducted by surveying children who were a part of the Aspiring Scientists Summer Internship Programs (ASSIP) at George Mason University. By surveying 149 high school and undergraduate students who participated between 2007 and 2013, researchers discovered significant factors that contribute to sustaining students’ interest in STEM. Coaching 3 girls to earn the Girl Scouts of the USA Gold Award was one of the most impactful volunteer jobs I've had. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞 "𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬" 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐚 𝐆𝐢𝐫𝐥 𝐒𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐭. 𝐄𝐱𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬: 1) Create "comfort kits" for children entering foster care. Partner with public service foster care agency. This student was interested in pursuing psychology in college. 2) Renovate the "family waiting room" within police stations for comfort and to include child-appropriate activities. Partner with a specific police station. This student had family members who were officers and knew these rooms often needed attention. 3) Create a Women in STEM webinar to educate high school girls about various careers in STEM and answer questions. Partner with university chapters of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), and the national organization of SWE. This student went into a STEM major in college. 4) Create a permanent art installation to comfort patients undergoing health treatments. Partner with a health care provider facility. This student went into graphic design in college. Empowering Girls in STEM: A Collective Approach to Inclusivity, Accessibility, and Advocacy   We can no longer afford to keep doing the same things expecting different results. Current educational trends and statistics on women’s representation in technology, engineering, and computing (TEC) dictate that there’s a much-needed call to positively disrupt the existing conditions that perpetuate the absence of gender diversity in TEC.  A collective action and multifaceted approach that prioritizes inclusivity, accessibility, and advocacy for girls may help guide this call to action which includes: 1) Implementing initiatives to introduce girls to STEM subjects at an early age and providing accessible and engaging educational resources. 2) Increasing access to role models who have similar life experiences as girls with limited STEM, social, and financial capital. 3) Providing equitable access to resources, scholarships, internships, and career development opportunities regardless of background or life circumstances. 4) Demystifying myths, breaking down stereotypes, and addressing unconscious bias in educational and institutional practices, media, and society at large to create a more inclusive, safe, and welcoming environment. 5) Engaging parents, educators, policymakers, and industry leaders in collaborative efforts to promote gender diversity and equity in STEM fields.   “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” – George Santayana, The Life of Reason, 1905.
