They have the opportunity to reach their full potential when nurtured by empowered and connected families who are supported by strong communities.” So it seems… Early years: ✅ focus on equity Public schools: ✅ focus on equity Private schools: ❌ little to no focus on equity Universities & higher education: ✅ focus on equity Workplaces & communities: ✅ focus on equity Families & parents: ✅ focus on equity Is it just me or…?? How would ‘forcing a 4 year old boy to have a short back & sides haircut in order to comply with an outdated stereotype of masculinity’ comply with this strategy I wonder? Just hypothetically. Asking for a friend 😜 Or will this just be yet another national document that private schools don’t have to align with because they’re special. They’re not too special to take $billions from taxpayers though are they? Something is broken with the education system in Australia. Actually scratch that. Many things are broken. But if we don’t speak up, step up, act up, nothing will change. We are back, baby! And we're stoked to invite you all to the FOURTH season of Racial Justice Weavings. These weekly gatherings are for outdoor education and recreation professionals from any school, company, or organization, in any role. First-timers and old-timers all welcome and encouraged! If you are seeking support for: processing your summer or fall season with a racial justice lens, racial justice work you're doing in your own family or workplace, or your personal liberation practice, join us. We're here to do it in community. Logistics: - Wednesday evenings on Zoom, 6-8pm MST - September 4 - December 11, 2024 (with a few breaks in there) - Sliding scale pricing and we will not let cost be a barrier to anyone participating. In September 2020, we (Steph and Ella) began hosting a weekly space for our fellow backpacking and climbing instructors to talk about white supremacy, racism, and racial justice in outdoor education. The Racial Justice Weavings - "Weavings" - were named to place this gathering within its context: a long history and future of racial justice advocacy in outdoor spaces and education. The goal was to foster antiracist culture in our outdoor leadership school through collective learning and relationship-building. This relational, culture-shifting work is slow but it is powerful. We have learned and grown a lot together in the last four years, and we’re eager to keep building and deepening with the next cohort. Message [email protected] to sign up.

Owning our role is so very important. As Terry said, we have to own more than just our specific areas. I recently was at Harvard for our Physician Team Leadership meeting, and one of the professors described silos as “cylinders of excellence”. That really resonated with me. We often focus on our own space, but neglect to realize how that affects the rest of the organization. You can tend to your own space in the best way possible. But if you don’t recognize the importance of the big picture, and how your leadership affects the overall organization, you are still a renter. 🌟 Celebrating Real-Life Superheroes this Mother's Day 🌟 This upcoming Mother's Day, we're proud to shine a spotlight on the incredible work of our McGowan Fellows, who are not just leaders but real-life superheroes creating positive change. Meet Sahar Jamal, a McGowan Alumna whose journey embodies the spirit of ethical leadership. As an advocate for working mothers, Sahar understood the challenges many face upon returning to work after childbirth. She recognized the need for solutions that support mothers in balancing their professional and personal lives effectively. In response, she spearheaded the development of a small, discreet, battery-operated breast pump that refrigerates milk, addressing critical challenges faced by mothers in Kenya and beyond. Sahar's story is a testament to the impact of ethical leadership nurtured through our Fellowship Program. At the heart of this program are six guiding principles: Accountability, Character & Integrity, Courage, Empathy, Resilience, and Self-Awareness. These principles empower our Fellows to make integrity-based business decisions that create meaningful social impact. Through our program, Sahar discovered a community of like-minded leaders. Together, they are shaping a future where leadership is defined by principles and actions that benefit society at large.
