While there is the persistent buzz around humanoid robots, I question the idea of making the robot looking like the human. Looking “like” but not alike indeed. The android can be really scary while at the same time inefficient due to the vendor’s intent to make it completely universal. My own view is that the robot is nothing else but an AI-powered “vacuum cleaner” or “loader”, well, “cook”, etc.. Even the multi-purpose robot can appear as a mobile box, since it really fits to any human environment exactly like other equipment. #robots #robotics #artificialintelligence #ai

"Humanoid robots are having a moment. Amazon is testing out bipedal robots called Digit from startup Agility Robotics in its warehouses. Figure AI recently raised a $675 million megaround at a $2.6 billion valuation to develop humanoids for BMW of North America and others. And Elon Musk is pitching Tesla's futuristic Optimus as one day being able to help assemble cars — even though the only demo bot he's shown so far appears to be a human operated one (a step up from a human in a costume). That’s just a few of the more than a dozen companies, including Norwegian firm 1X and Sanctuary AI that are developing humanoids with the promise that they, unlike task-specific robots, can do many different things, just like humans. This is a question that comes to my mind from time to time when I see modern robots - why humanoid? Form should be suited to function, no to fantasy. Why won't the best robots look and act like a blend of creatures, say an octopus blended with a centipede and an ant? Is the shape of the human form and its physical capabilities really the best 'model' to imitate and develop? Here's a thought for you. Robots repeating defined steps in a controlled environment, such as a factory, is what many people think of when imagining what they could do for a business. Robots manifesting into physical reality the insights of AI / ML to explore, analyse, and respond to undefined stimuli and support skilled humans in complex environments is what they can actually do for a business. The first scales manufacturing. The second scales organisations.

On the same level as 'spatial intelligence' a new level of 'guidance' or 'environmental' intelligence will be required. This would have to be tied to the types of sensors and cameras would be incorporated for an AI driven robot to apply the 'spatial intelligence' for movement free and independent of their 'human controller.' This would be beyond current GPS style guidance used in vehicles or equipment with cameras. Navigating a multi-storied building or rooms is not the same as driving fields or roads. Then imagine applying this AI to actual vehicles and equipment who are not humanoid.
