A Monday thought for you to ponder… Lots of people start new jobs in September. And when we're planning their onboarding, it's natural to think about it mainly from the new starter's point of view; what do they need to know, who do they need to meet, what can we do to help them feel welcome and supported? etc. But what about the existing team? How often do we ask 'how can we quickly build the team's confidence in the new starter?' This is such an important part of the onboarding process because the new members can only add value and feel truly connected to the business, when the existing team ‘let them in’. How do you achieve this in your company? In what ways have you changed your approach with the rise of hybrid in-person/remote teams? “The best onboarding experience I have had in a business!” 😮😮😮 This year, we have transformed our employee onboarding experience at connective3. It wasn’t ‘bad’ before, but with our fully hybrid working model and the number of new starters we have joining us each month, we definitely saw areas we could do better! As part of the new process, our people team now has a week 1 and month 1 check-in with all new employees to check that they are settling in ok, they have everything they need, they are gelling with their team and to answer any questions they may still have. In these catchups, we have heard such amazing feedback on everything we are doing – it makes you realise just how important those first few weeks are to how your employees feel. My favourite change we have made is such a simple idea of having a new starter’s favourite biscuits and soft drink on their desks for their first day. It may be simple, but that little taste of comfort when you are in a completely new environment makes a world of difference. The best team providing the best onboarding experience! It's scary leaving your comfort zone and starting in a new company so at c3 we try and make this as seamless as possible so people feel settled right from the start. I regularly check in with new starters during their first three months to take make sure they are settling in okay and if they need any extra support from our People team. We also assign each new starter a buddy from another team within the business, we do this to encourage new starters to integrate with people outside of their team and also someone they feel comfortable they can go to with any questions that isn't their line manager. We also invite new starters to any socials before they join so it takes the pressure off their first day as they've already met people before they start. What truly defines a stellar onboarding journey? Is it the thoughtfully curated welcome package, or perhaps, the meticulously outlined onboarding roadmap? Especially for companies with a legacy of longevity and a team of long-term steadfast and devoted employees, the task of seamlessly integrating a newcomer into the fabric of the organization can indeed be an intriguing challenge. These seasoned team members hold a treasure trove of knowledge within, a wealth of insights and experiences that have often gone undocumented. This is my old new experience while being a newcomer in my second long-life company.
