I love tennis, and it is literally the only sport I enjoy watching on TV. I love watching other sports live, however not on TV. Federer, one of the all-time tennis greats, gave a speech that really resonated with me. Federer recently gave a speech at Dartmouth, and as part of his speech, he shared some pretty insane stats about his games and career. Of the 1526 singles matches he played, he won 80% of them, which is pretty damn impressive. Then he went on to share the percentage of points he actually won out of the 80% of games he won. Can you guess what that number was? It was only 54% of points won. So, he hit an imperfect shot 46% of the time. What this highlights is that you only need to be 4% better than the average to win 80% of the time. How freaking insane is that? Just 4%! In other words, you just need to win barely more than half the time to be 80% better than the rest. The next time you lose at something or fail at it, try again and again and again until you are just barely winning over 50% of the shots you take at doing something, and you'll be exponentially better than the rest. So, perfection is impossible, no matter how perfect something looks on the outside or the end result. And in other news, if you're not already across it, Djokovic took home the Olympic gold for tennis! One of the things I enjoy doing is watching highlights of Tennis matches. Today, I watched the highlights of Jannik Sinner’s Monte Carlo Semifinal match with Stefanos Tsitsipas One of insightful parts of this habit is reading through the YouTube comments. Below is an illuminating, unedited, comment. “how you reacted in front of adversity is what make you a champion (even not winning) and in this case, Jannik showed he has all we all want to see in a true champion: fairness, class, generosity, mental strenght and humanity. I think most of us like him and support him for these qualities, and not only for his tennis skills. He is like a bit of a light, a shiny blue sky in the dark business of tennis and sport in general” Here are some takeaways that come to mind: 1. Maintain class even when you are wronged or treated unfairly. 2. Be full of grace and generosity. 3. Realize that you need to be well rounded and complete in several areas to become a “champion”. I don't think I agree with the commentary this evening on Alcaraz's game. Agreed he made too many unforced errors in the 1st set and didn't play his best tennis at times. But despite this, his body language and stroke play remained positive and he turned the match around 6-0, 6-1 after losing the first set 6-7. Alcaraz isn't part of the Spanish mold of high percentage tennis with shot selection based on well rehearsed patterns and patience to wear out the opponent. He's an attacking minded player. He plays high risk tennis particularly with the drop shots and how frequently he uses them from different parts of the court. It's the combination of pace, touch, variety and athleticism that makes him so great (and exciting to watch) and why's he's a multiple Grand Slam champion already! I don't think one coaches Alcaraz discussing percentage tennis and shot selection discipline. I feel you trust and let his instincts come through. He is getting stronger and finding greater amounts of pace. So yes, if he's over-hitting, one may bring that up and discuss ways he can harness his power better. But if you try to make Alcaraz a percentage player, I feel you take away what makes him unique. What is unique are the number of options, how potent they are, the creativity and unpredictability of his stroke play. Alcaraz is going through a lean patch, but I believe today's match at Indian Wells is a positive because he demonstrated a deeper level of confidence in his abilities. He's committing to playing positive and attacking tennis and this is how he gets through this phase in my opinion and regains his form. #atptour #tennis

Roger lost 46% of all points he played... In the sport of Tennis, whilst there is no such thing as perfection, Roger Federer over his career has soared near perfection as humanly possible. Watching Roger play is like watching a Picasso in full flight. His playing style is described as “effortless” as he crushes his opponents. When we think of Roger, we naturally think of him as the dominating winner, but the reality is that he lost ~46% of the 236,038 points that he played over this 24 years career! The fundamental similarity of Tennis to Life, is that small differences compounds over our lifetime to make a huge difference. Over Roger’s career, he had a win ratio of only 54% on 236,038 points but this win ratio compounded into 76% on 4,040 sets and then compounded again, into a win ratio of 82% for 1,520 matches, which resulted in 20 Grand Slam[1] tournament wins and US$131 mn of prize money. Tennis is a brutal sport; of the 128 gladiators that enter a Grand Slam tournament, after 7 rounds played over 2 weeks, there is only 1 winner. I think the following quote section beautifully captures how Roger plays his Tennis, and more importantly, how Roger lives his life. This is why Roger is an inspiration to me both on the off the Tennis court.
