Sadly this was the case of another life being lost within the construction industry due to disregard of safe systems of work, specifically loading of spandrel panelling onto the roofs only after the trusses had been properly secured as stated within the method statement for this particular part of the work. The trusses had been loaded onto the roofs but only temporarily secured with timber restraints which would not have given enough stability for the wind that eventually caused the collapse of the trusses and panelling to the work area below and causing the fatal injuries mentioned. As mentioned before, ignorance of the method statement was cited in the investigation but also a lack of consideration for spandrel panelling being stored at height and the likelihood of side winds causing instability. Method statements are structured in such a way that working operations are carried out in the safest and most logical way possible, disregarding these documents can and will put people at risk of injury or, as in this incident, death.
