Mesmerized by lighthouses since childhood. So far I have visited 3 lighthouses and conquered one of those. For me they’re not just beacons at sea; they symbolize direction and purpose. ⚓ Lighthouses, standing tall and solitary amidst the vast expanse of the sea, symbolize much more than their practical function of guiding ships to safety. They represent resilience in the face of adversity, as they weather storms and withstand the test of time. Like beacons of hope, they offer guidance and direction to those navigating the often turbulent waters of life. Beyond their physical presence, lighthouses embody the metaphorical significance of finding one's way, illuminating the path forward even in the darkest of times. In a world filled with uncertainty and challenges, lighthouses serve as reminders to stay steadfast in our pursuits, to remain anchored to our values, and to always strive towards the light. They inspire us to embrace our inner strength and to guide others along their journey. Last weekend I attended a silent retreat, and my teacher, Ian Maher, shared this beautiful piece that spoke to my heart. I'm sharing it with you: In his book "Song of the Bird", Fr. Anthony de Mello shares a short parable where he writes: A man found an eagle’s egg and put it in the nest of a barnyard hen. The eaglet hatched with the brood of chicks and grew up with them. All his life the eagle did what the barnyard chicks did, thinking he was a barnyard chicken. He scratched the earth for worms and insects. He clucked and cackled. And he would thrash his wings and fly a few feet into the air. Years passed and the eagle grew very old. One day he saw a magnificent bird above him in the cloudless sky. It glided in graceful majesty among the powerful wind currents, with scarcely a beat of its strong golden wings. The old eagle looked up in awe. “Who’s that?” he asked. “That’s the eagle, the king of the birds,” said his neighbor. “He belongs to the sky. We belong to the earth—we’re chickens.” So the eagle lived and died a chicken, for that’s what he thought he was. This is an unsettling parable because, of course, it is not written for birds. It is written for us. It is written so that we might ask, “Which bird am I? Which bird do I think I am? What is the song of my bird?” De Mello’s main point is that the eagle was not living the life he was supposed to live and there was a whole other world waiting for him. But he couldn’t see it. He couldn’t believe it. When we ask, “Which bird am I? Which bird do I think I am? What is the song of my bird?” what we are really asking is not whether we are flying too low and should we be flying above others, but are we living the lives we are supposed to be living? #coaching #findyourpurpose #fridayreflections
