The stupidest contributor to climate change is food waste. Each year we produce more than enough food for every person on the planet, yet one third of it is never eaten and one out of five people goes to bed without knowing when their next meal will be. Food that decomposes in fields, transportation, refrigerators, homes and landfills would, if counted as a whole, be the THIRD LARGEST emitter after the USA and China. And for what? That lost and wasted food does not contribute financially if farmers cannot sell it to wholesalers, wholesalers cannot sell it to grocery stores and you pay to have it taken out with your trash. #foodwaste #climatechange #environment

There was a lot of ground covered at the #ESGinDairySummit last Thursday. The panel I spoke on looked to unpack the scepticism directed at dairy, and indeed agriculture at large. I was reminded of a quote from David Attenborourgh “Saving our planet is now a communications challenge. We know what to do, we just need the will.” From those I spoke to, and the comments from the floor, there was no shortage of will. A point brought home by fellow panellists’ Dennis Drennan, Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association - ICMSA and Conor Mulvihill, Dairy Industry Ireland. But there was frustration. A sense that what needs to be done is at risk due to over-complication and how the cost is distributed. The EU announcement this week to reduce the administrative burden on farmers recognises this. But there was also a sense that the progress being made, as highlighted by fellow panelist Prof. Karina Pierce, UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science , is not getting the recognition it deserves. That the actions taken can feel fragmented as opposed to joined up. The climate crisis we face is complex, and requires complex and multifaceted solutions. All these parts on their own may seem small, but we must never lose sight of the critical goal that unites each and every sustainable action taken – to save our planet. Achieving this goal is the only option, so we must support and encourage those whose positive actions will have the greatest impact. The challenge is to use communications to unite our actions and our will, instead of fragmenting and polarising them. Headed to Denver this morning to join the U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef Goals Progress Working Group Meeting. #USRSB members have spent countless hours in the last few years defining high priority indicators and setting sector targets to ensure the vision that the US beef value chain is a trusted global leader in environmentally sound, socially responsible and economically viable beef. ABS Global has been engaged with USRSB for a number of years because we believe in the mission of supporting the continuous improvement of beef sustainability and because, like other beef industry stakeholders, we have a role to play in creating a more sustainable food supply. The next couple of days will focus on reviewing goals and targets and ensuring we can properly measure the progress the industry is making across all sectors. We can indeed sustainably feed a growing global population that is demanding more high quality animal source proteins, especially beef, but credibly and transparently demonstrating improvement is paramount to success. Attended the The Rural Policy Group All Party Parliamentary Group on fair value in the food supply chain in the House of Commons last night. Chaired by Mark J Lumsdon-Taylor the focus being on five outcomes: 1. 70% self sufficiency achieved by 2030 2. Greater collaboration 3. Greater regard for British Agriculture and farming 4. Greater utilisation of technology to benefit productivity 5. To have a sustainable business model which is transparent and has ESG at the heart Thank you for the invite Katie Tucker. The significance of the group can not be understated however, with a general election on the horizon, all parties, whatever the outcome need to commit their support. The risks associated with food production continue to increase: intense and varied weather patterns - so far, a reported decrease of 25% of wheat area and, increased production costs - 39% in the last 2 years for the hortic sector, to name two. In order to achieve the 5 outcomes above, they will need to be underpinned by policies that provide long term commitment.
