CPO at OpenAI, board member at The Nature Conservancy, Planet Federal, BPM. Prev: President at Planet, co-creator Libra, Head of Product at Instagram and Twitter.
I’m super excited to announce that I’m joining OpenAI as Chief Product Officer! My entire career has been about working on big missions: connecting people and ideas at Instagram and Twitter, digitizing financial services at Libra/Novi, or most recently at Planet, using space to advance global security, sustainability, and transparency. OpenAI’s mission to build AGI to benefit all of humanity is perhaps the most important and transformative of them all. OpenAI’s products are used around the world, by everyone from individuals to startups to the Fortune 500. They’ve set the pace for both breakthrough innovation, and thoughtful deployment of AI products. I’m excited to work with Sam Altman, Mira Murati, Greg Brockman, Jason Kwon, Brad Lightcap, Bob McGrew, Sarah Friar, Srinivas Narayanan, Ian S., and the whole OpenAI team to help drive this next phase of growth, as we continue to safely and responsibly build towards AGI. And btw, I’m eager to hear your feedback here as we push forward on all of the above. What do you love, and what could be better? What would you like to see us build? I know you won’t be shy 😉 More on the OpenAI blog, including that I finally get to work alongside Sarah Friar in her new role as CFO! https://lnkd.in/e8Ni6QKj
Huge
HUGE! Congrats Kevin!
Congrats, Kevin! Excited to work with you
I don't understand how you can square this with your passion for conserving nature, specifically water. The amount of water OpenAI is pulling from aquifers to train and maintain its products is staggering. And neither Microsoft nor OpenAI have legitimate, measurable plans to retrofit current liquid-cooled datacenters to staunch the demand. How can you square your work with The Nature Conservancy with this new role?
As a board member at the Nature Conservancy, how are you planning to address the rampant energy consumption of AI and how that is contributing to climate disaster?
How is AGI a product? Is openAI using a very narrow definition of AGI that doesn't mean superintelligence? How do you "sell" a "product" that could theoretically make every corp and human worker in the world unnecessary?
First off - Congrats on what is undoubtedly an exciting role, and congrats on your accomplishment. "OpenAI’s mission to build AGI to benefit all of humanity is perhaps the most important and transformative of them all." But I don't see how anyone who knows whats going on not just in OpenAI, but across the industry can say this with a straight-face. Altman is building an doomsday bunker "just for fun" (as you do), so his perspective of what "Transformative" means here is much less optimistic than the mission statement implies. But more important than billionaire antics, OpenAI is pushing the deceptive narrative that AI can replace people, "knows", "reasons", an is "intelligent" in any meaningful sense. This actively and demonstrably harms huge swathes of people while benefiting only the smallest sliver of folks in the world. Not to mention that GenAI is built on the backs of exploited labor in developing countries many of whom suffered long-last psychological harm as a result. But yes, please. Tell me more about how this mission is to benefit "all of humanity"
Congrats! One of the biggest impacts you can land immediately is to ensure that all heavy compute runs on renewable energy. It’s an easy win because the model has already been implemented by many of the large compute cloud providers. You will forever control the narrative around green compute in AI, sidestepping the shadow crypto lives in, and elevating yourselves above AI competition.
Beyond excited and it’s about time! Let’s go team 👏
