Thrilled to share our paper, accepted as a poster presentation at the 84th Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association (ADA), which starts today at Orlando, Florida.
This paper describes our first foray - a tool focusing on improving medication adherence through optimizing person-physician conversations in the clinic. Since times immemorial, the physician's spoken word has remained sacred. In fact, the "Word" was one of the three basic tools of medicine including herb (medications) and knife (surgical interventions) in ancient Greece. The word remains critical in this tech-driven era as well.
We hypothesized that optimizing in-clinic conversations using the power of positive words can improve medication adherence and foster positive behavior change in persons. We have built a first-of-its-kind artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tool (patent published) that provides conversation cues for physicians to promote biopsychosocial well being of persons and consequently improve adherence rates.
Our first use case is in type 2 diabetes, the tool is being customized for other therapy areas including obesity, oncology, cardiometabolic disorders, vaccinology, and nutrition among others. The conversation cues, both positive and negative, are based on various person attributes and biochemical parameters.
Medication nonadherence is a long-standing, complex challenge affecting patient outcomes and the sustainability of existing healthcare systems. In purely commercial terms, data suggests nonadherence costs over $1 trillion in sales for the pharmaceutical industry and over $300 billion in added medical costs to the healthcare system annually.
With this tool, which can be integrated into currently available EHR platforms, we have attempted to address one cause of medication nonadherence - that of person-physician conversations. While the ADA paper summarizes a pilot test run, the MVP is being tested by a larger group of physicians to assess how words impact medication adherence rates and health outcomes.
