I vacillate in how I think about defensibility in the early-stage. Last week, Hatchery posted about the release of our Writing Assistant (https://lnkd.in/gc99VJbi). What I did not mention, however, was that we struck a deal to develop this for a tutoring service (a category leader in its space). We umm-ed and ahh-ed on building the thing in the first instance. It was not a core product hook, it'd be a small imposition on our roadmap, and it did not seem wholly defensible. Doesvalueaccruetotheapplicationorfoundationlayerandshouldweevendothis? We ended up doing the thing. Yesterday, we received this lovely piece of feedback from one of their lead academics [PII redacted]. I'm not sure exactly the point I'm making here, except to say "to hell with defensibility (sort of)". Sometimes building good and useful things is - shock - good and useful, even if the moat isn't imminently apparent.

Chiamaka’s advice on examination success. Again, it's that time of the semester where we (the students) get tested by the lecturers via a series of exams to know how good we are in the understanding of any course. Personally, the exams period is my favorite part of the semester because I'm 100% sure that in 2-3 weeks I'll have all the time in the world to focus on activities outside school. 😂 If you mentioned cooking, you're correct. Here are some key points that have been tested and trusted to help one scale through an examination; 📌 Eat healthy. 📌 Eliminate fear. 📌 Prepare ahead. 📌 Have a reading partner. 📌 Read all questions carefully. 📌 Know how your body works. 📌 Make God your number 1 factor. These have not only been tested by me, but also by a lot of academically sound individuals around me. What other tip am I forgetting? TURNING NO INTO GO… WHAT IT REALLY TAKES! I think we’ve all been there, those times in our lives when we want to be able to do something, but for whatever reason when we get to a certain point we are stopped in our tracks! There are many things that can get in our way - uncertainty, fear, self-doubt. Sometimes these things take you by surprise, you could be really motivated to achieve something, but then your mindset can change and you’re suddenly consumed with negativity. This happened to me when I started college. Going to agricultural college to study animal management was all that I wanted to do. I knew exactly what GCSE grades I needed to get onto the course and those grades were all that mattered to me! I worked so hard at school and during the school holidays I would come home armed with ‘extra’ work… I really did put everything I had into achieving those grades! I couldn’t wait to get to college and start my course, and eventually September 2003 came! But, the reality was that when I got onto campus, I hated it! It wasn’t the course - I loved the course, but I hated the college environment. Having been to a special school since the age of 4, I had spent 14 years in a protected environment with friends who I had grown up with and staff who had supported me for years. But now I was on my own in the big wide world and I’ll be honest, I found it scary! There was many times throughout my 3 years when I was so far out of my comfort zone that I really wanted to quit. But I knew that if I quit then I would be giving up on something that I really wanted to achieve, something that I had worked so hard for. I also knew deep down that if I had allowed myself to quit, I really would regret it in the long term. I decided that I had to just put my head down, focus on my work and remember what it was that I wanted to achieve. It was a tough few years but I was so proud that I had found the strength to turn no into go and push through until the end. I received a distinction in my course too!! Carroll University celebrated commencement just about two weeks ago, which is a day of celebration! This Instagram reel brought forth that feeling, using a funny moment to add a highlight to the university. A graduate decorated her cap with a quote “Makes me want a hot dog real bad.” - Jennifer Coolidge. Carroll University decided what better way to celebrate, than to give her a hot dog! And it went viral. Turns out, we all could use a hot dog real bad. 🌭 So the question is….. Can the Higher Education industry bring a spark to social media, marketing, and united leadership?
