Why is television such an effective medium? It’s largely because of the way we watch, Prof. Karen Nelson-Field told the audience in this interesting Cannes panel discussion hosted by Justin Lebbon. TV has a slower rate of “viewing decay,” so brands can share messages in longer ads. With other platforms, users may see an ad for less than two seconds. That steep decay of involvement makes it hard to get enough attention to create memories and in turn build a brand. It can be easy to get distracted by ‘shiny new things’ which may have fundamentals that aren’t advantageous. We treat every channel and opportunity on its proven merits.
