Executive Vice President, Chief People and Operations Officer at Phoenix Suns/ Phoenix Mercury/Footprint Center
As we wrap up our 9th year of Girls with GRITcc we have reached a new milestone of reaching the most girls in grades 3-8th in one season than we ever have. While last year we fell short of our target, this year we served 117 unique campers with 62 campers attending more than one camp or clinic. It’s been an up and down 9 years (during COVID we ran virtual camp-12 kids). However at every turn there is a chance to learn. Some things have stayed the same and some have changed. First the things that have stayed the same… 1.) Our mission - “to build confidence in girls in sports” 2.) Our Values - Every year we have a diverse group of dedicated people on our team who are willing to be selfless and both live and teach our principles daily! - Be Yourself, Smile and Have Fun - Be a supportive teammate - Have Grit- Finish and have perseverance - Be a problem solver - Be your Best 3.) Our Impact and Intentions - We believe in role models and community. If you see it you can achieve it. Our camp has a diverse staff that reflects our students and their families. Over 90 percent of students and care givers said their camper grew their confidence during the summer on our survey. Our goal is to make the camp accessible and affordable for any girl to attend so we offered over 30 scholarships. Our donors are people who believe in the vision. A huge shot out to our donors, our volunteers and this year the support of the United Way of Greater Cincinnati Black Empowerment Works Grant. Now while the things above have stayed the same, we wouldn’t still be operating if we stood still. The business model has evolved. Leading this organization has continued to push me learn new things and ways of working. So what’s changed… 1.) After COVID we had to re-launch a campaign to remind people who we were. If not used in 2-3 years you won’t be top of mind. I’ve learned you must always build your brand. Key Lesson: STAY HUNGRY! 2.) 1 year after COVID I moved and said I want to keep running it but expand to PHX. After a year of commuting I officially hired Jai'La N. to move from our Lead in Volleyball to run the Cincinnati chapter for all camps. She both understands the brand and brings a unique non profit background and skill set to help us scale up. Key Lesson: DELEGATE and EMPOWER. You can’t do everything and some people will know more than you in a pace. EMBRACE IT! 3.) This year we reached more girls but we ran less summer clinics, we got new leadership, built new positions, we combined our soccer/track program and we adjusted our strategy in schools so that our partnership isn’t passive but is engrained within the school system. Key Lesson: LISTEN to both the DATA and the feedback. If something isn’t working, CHANGE IT! Every year this is the coolest thing I get to do. Seeing former campers, players, volunteers, donors and staff members give girls the confidence to be their best continues to inspire me. Year 9 ✅, more to come, more to do… #iammybest
