Celebrating Juneteenth
Juneteenth, celebrated annually on June 19th, marks the end of slavery in the United States. As I reflect on this significant day, I'm reminded of the journey towards freedom and the ongoing fight for true liberation.
Here's how my family and I honor this day and extend its it's importance throughout the year:
1. Educational Legacy: We uphold my father-in-law's tradition of Juneteenth celebrations, emphasizing education over food. We ensure the next generation understands the importance of this holiday through storytelling and shared wisdom. I learned about Juneteenth not in a classroom, but from my Dean and father-in-law, highlighting the value of family education.
2. Challenging Norms: We continually challenge limiting ideas, habits, and beliefs that hinder our freedom. I believe in striving for abundance and not settling for less, inspired by my faith in a God of abundance. Challenging norms helps us create a more liberating and fulfilling environment.
3. Learning and Growth: We invite others on our journey of discovery, whether through visiting museums, reading, or studying. Embracing continuous learning helps us understand ourselves and the world better.
Celebrating is important but we must do more and the more is a culmination of educating, challenging, and growing together
(hope you enjoy my Juneteenth poem from last year Mosaic ERG program)

<>Devotional<>Jesus lived, taught, and illustrated how each of us, yes absolutely everyone, can experience the same intimate fellowship with our Eternal Father. I address this further in my latest blog at https://lnkd.in/e4RE7KSJ. I welcome your thoughts.
This!! Definitely agree with Robyn WHITTAKER as to this article being beautiful. It is thought-provoking and one I will be pondering for a long time.
I am particularly intrigued by the “torpor” that is lifted up for our consideration, a torpor I feel has been exacerbated during the pandemic and which we are now even more reluctant/unskilled to emerge from. And yet, that very traumatic reality makes the revival/rebirth/emergence, hummingbird-like, all the more critical.
As one of South African heritage, I am also reminded of the African concept of Ubuntu: I am because we are. The concept is about a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity.
In the article, the implications for education, and the invitation to embrace vulnerability and to prioritize relationships, really resonated and will be something I will try to remember in dealing with friends, colleagues and students:
“I started to think about what has been scaled down so that the head could be scaled up. What has been scaled down for me is our sense of visceral connection with each other. We have been told that thinking is everything; that “we are” because “we think”; that reality is only what fits our enlarged bubble thinking heads. We have been taught to think about ourselves as much smaller and more limited than we actually are. I started to wonder about an education that could scale up what has been scaled down, that could un-numb the sense of visceral connection, and the responsibility that this entails.”
Do yourself a favor today: set aside some time to savor this article, and to identify ways you can start to emerge from personal torpor, re-embrace relationship, and identify what we need to scale up in education.
And I believe our upcoming Aurora Symposium in New Orleans (Nov. 3-5, 2024) will also provide a venue for continuing these vital conversations:

International Day of Human Fraternity 2024:
Love and compassion can win over hate. When we come together and unite against negativity, even the biggest of problems can be solved.
It is important for mankind to understand that instead of going against each other, we should come together to live in harmony and happiness.
That will help us to solve the issues together and ensure that all of us live equally and with respect.
One of the main reasons for so many conflicts in the world is because we do not treat each other with compassion and empathy anymore.
Wars, conflicts, killings and sufferings reign the world, and it is time to change it for the better.
Every year, International Day of Human Fraternity is observed to celebrate the importance of unity in diversity and the significance of people coming together to live in harmony.
As we gear up to celebrate the special day for this year, here are a few things that we must keep in mind.
how can we expand our heart+minds beyond the edge of this "scientific" cliff?
how might we expand and deepen our 💙careING💜 practices at all scales and in all directions, allowing authentic ancient Indigenous Reciprocity expression emergence?
In January, I found myself in a situation that I could never have anticipated, yet it turned out to be one of the most fulfilling experiences of my recent journey.
I was at Andrews University, preparing to facilitate the recording of our Theological Seminary students, when an unexpected opportunity knocked on my door. Without any prior notice, I was asked to step in front of the camera and speak on a project that I hold close to my heart – a cause we are all passionately fundraising for.
With no script in hand and no time to prepare, I chose to say "Yes". Why? Because I had something far more powerful than a script. I had faith and a genuine belief in the cause we support. This became my strength in that spontaneous moment.
The video that emerged from this unforeseen request is a testament not just to my belief in the cause, but to the power of embracing the unexpected. It is a clear example of how, when we rely on our faith and the talents we are blessed with, we can achieve outcomes beyond our imagination.
I share this experience not to highlight my own actions, but to glorify God for endowing us with the ability to make a difference, especially when it's least expected. It's a reminder that the most impactful moments often come unannounced, challenging us to step out of our comfort zones and into the realm of endless possibilities.
As you watch the video, I encourage you to reflect on the unexpected opportunities that have come your way. Have you embraced them with open arms?
Let's charge ahead with a spirit of openness and faith. Say yes to the unexpected, and let's reap the rewards of surprising and fulfilling outcomes together. Because when we do, we not only fulfill our potential but also glorify the One who made it all possible.
