Early in my career, I witnessed a puzzling phenomenon: “leaders” who viewed rising talent as a threat rather than an asset. They'd build walls instead of bridges, seeing shadows where there could have been spotlights. Unfortunately, this isn't just a relic of the past. Throughout my career, I've seen this destructive pattern repeat itself, particularly with individuals thrust into 'leadership' roles without the experience of actually leading leaders. I've lived through the consequences. At times in my career, I have worked for brands that not only tolerated but actively encouraged this insecurity-based leadership style. It was, without exaggeration, some of the most demoralizing experiences of my professional life. The damage was palpable. High-potential employees either resigned themselves to mediocrity or left altogether. All because leaders were more focused on protecting their status than unleashing the collective potential of their teams. True leadership isn't about being the best at everything – it's about having the confidence to surround yourself with brilliant minds and the wisdom to let them shine. As executives, our job is to be talent magnets and growth catalysts. We should actively seek out those 'superstars' whose abilities complement and even surpass our own in certain areas. Their light doesn't diminish ours; it illuminates the path forward for the entire organization. Have you encountered toxic leadership cultures? Or better yet, how have you worked to create an environment where everyone's strengths are valued? Share your experiences below – let's learn from both the pitfalls and the triumphs. #leadership #toxicity #growthmindset #strength #empoweredempower
Love this: "True leadership isn't about being the best at everything – it's about having the confidence to surround yourself with brilliant minds and the wisdom to let them shine."
Kimberly Lee Minor This is how toxic cultures use #loneliness as a weapon, closing ranks and isolating people who are underrepresented at the top. And it's so hard to see it for what it is when you're in it. I'm so grateful for you for sharing your story and letting everyone know that it could and should be different. #10MinutesToTogetherness
Kimberly, it's unfortunate how common this issue is. How does WOC Retail Alliance foster a supportive leadership culture?
True leaders empower others around them.
That’s right. Leave that ego at the door.

2wOkay, Kimberly, it’s Sunday but God forbid you start the day with abject truth and in many ways a painful reality… LOL In all seriousness, I am happy to co-sign this image and theme because it is one that I address often and a major challenge that has plagued and described Baby Boomers in particular for decades. Real leaders are never afraid to hire talent that is smarter, more creative, and innovative than they because thet are secure and own their blindspots and they genuinely enjoy motivating and inspiring to pursue their runway and upside - the path towards their highest career goals and aspirations. Bravo Kimberly Lee Minor 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
