Before energy recovery devices were introduced to the desalinization process, concentrate energy was wasted through a throttling valve, making desalinization too costly for wide adoption. Now with energy recoveries, turbocharger plant operators can recover a significant portion of this wasted energy and transferred back to the seawater reverse osmosis feed stream. This energy recovery device, or ERD, reduces the amount of pressure. High pressure pump must create greatly reducing the amount of power that's needed to produce water. This technology not only saves operating expenses every year, but also reduces the initial capital expense due to a smaller pump and motor and the elimination of the throttling valve. The turbocharger can be thought of as a second pump in series with a high pressure pump, but it's powered by a hydraulic turbine rather than a traditional electric motor. The turbine impeller is attached to the pump impeller by a common shaft. The hydraulic energy from the concentrate stream energizes and is then harnessed by the turbine impeller and converted to mechanical energy, then transferred to the pump impeller. The pump impeller then converts the mechanical energy back to hydraulic energy, which provides an additional pressure. Goes to the feed stream. Changes in operating conditions can cause the turbocharger to operate off what is called the best efficiency point or BEP traditional design methods. Changing the hydraulics requires time-consuming re machining of the existing units or a complete replacement of the entire device, both of which require a long period of downtime. The removable hydraulic design approach allows the customer to change the hydraulic requirements of the device at any time and operate the system at peak. Efficiency. All of our hydraulic pathways are machined into non metallic insertable components, removing all custom machinery from the stainless steel casing. New hydraulic components can be purchased and shipped globally without having extended periods of equipment shutdown. Once the new hydraulic components arrive at a plant, the operator simply changes out the lightweight internals and is back to operating at maximum efficiency. With the Energy Recovery turbocharger there is minimal downtime versus days or weeks with other methods suitable for.
