Recently, I was interviewed by Susanne Ackermann about the use of self-binding directives (or Ulysses arrangements) in mental healthcare. The interview has now appeared in Psychologie Heute! Self-binding directives are documents that allow mental health service users to plan their involuntary hospital admission and treatment during a future mental health crisis in advance. They can strengthen the autonomy of service users, improve the therapeutic alliance, enable early intervention, and help to avoid personally-defined harms. Do you want to know more about this? Study after study has shown that people with depression have trouble recalling specific memories. They might hear the word "party," for instance, and think, "I don’t get invited to parties often." By contrast, someone without depression could hear the word "party" and immediately recall a childhood birthday or recent celebration at a friend’s house. “It’s not that depressed patients don’t have memories — it’s that they’re having trouble accessing them," said Kymberly Young, an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh.
