After last year's affirmative action ruling, The Hechinger Report asked newly accepted students from across the country to share their college application essays with them. One of the stories selected was Kendall Martin from KIPP Texas Public Schools. Students throughout the country grappled with how to present themselves to an education system stacked against them. However, Kendall stood steadfast in making sure her racial identity was captured in her college admissions essay. Now headed to Rice University in Houston – her first choice from a half-dozen options – she included a photo of her braids as part of her application. Her identity and the strength she harbors to overcome the adversity that comes with being a Black woman in America, is not to be ignored. In 1956, Soror Autherine Lucy etched her name as a Black History Maker when she courageously embarked on a challenging battle to end segregation at The University of Alabama. The institution had adhered to an unchallenged “whites only” policy for 121 years. Soror Lucy, alongside her friend Pollie Ann Myers, gained acceptance into the school, only to be denied entry within seven days when officials learned of their race. A three-year legal effort by Civil Rights Lawyers, Arthur Shores and Thurgood Marshall ended when the landmark ruling of Brown v. The Board of Education of Topeka unanimously declared segregation illegal and discarded the “separate but equal” policy. Becoming the first black student at the University of Alabama, Soror Lucy faced harassment from a group of white students and was subsequently expelled by school officials, who alleged she had spread rumors about her torment. Thirty-two years later, in April 1988, after speaking to a history class at the university, Soror Lucy received a letter rescinding her expulsion, allowing her to complete her degree. She graduated concurrently with her daughter, Grazia. Soror Lucy’s legacy endures, with the University of Alabama honoring her with a $25,000 scholarship named after her. Additionally, an honorary portrait was hung in the university halls in 1992, ensuring her impact is recognized and remembered. Drs. Cassandra Hart's and Constance Lindsay's timely research is a must read especially in our current anti-DEI environment. "Recent studies have pointed to the importance of contextual factors such as school segregation in shaping the dynamics of racialized assignment to school settings (Elder et al., 2021; Fish, 2019a). Our study points to teacher race as a potentially important contextual factor in the identification of students for special education. Policymakers and other stakeholders may want to pursue educator diversity as one potential strategy to address over-identification of minoritized children for special education programs. "At the same time, expanding the recruitment of Black teachers is only one strategy to mitigate these differentials. Districts should, therefore, consider other promising options to improve the success of non-Black teachers with students of color."

These issues are so nuanced. Thank you, @PaulLadipo for this helpful clarification of how #WhitePrivilege does not change with a few small actions. It can only change with reformed systems. All the below actions and experiences are helpful, but it takes more than this. Yet white people will never fully understand the experience of Black people (and vice versa). This does not mean we don’t try. Our brains play tricks on us. They make us think we are more significantly different than we are and that differences make others threatening. We must push past those primal responses and be more intentional with our words and actions: 💞Building on commonalities 💞Balancing inequities 💞Sharing resources It might be a lofty goal that seems impossible. But is it any more difficult than trying to be the next multibillionaire, world-reknown celebrity, etc.?

She had a Black fiancée, openly talked about systemic racism, faithfully attended a campus multicultural group, and even had Black adopted siblings. However: 👉🏾 McKayla could not understand the need for Black students to carve out their own space on campus. 👉🏾 She became highly offended when I said she was less likely to get a speeding ticket if a cop stopped either of us. 👉🏾 McKayla could not, for the life of her, understand why Black students were uneasy about her trying to take control of a mostly Black student group. Let me be clear: McKayla was a great person with a big heart. But all her interracial relationships and good intentions did not erase her privilege. In the corporate world, her assertiveness would likely promote her over a Black professional with significantly more qualifications and experience. If she committed a crime, the legal system was more likely to give her a slap on the wrist compared to Black or Latino defendents. And McKayla's privilege shielded her from realizing why Black employees often feel safer in mostly or all Black groups. Yes, cross-cultural, cross-gender, cross-whatever relationships are important. But relationships with no examination of internalized or systemic biases only perpetuate harm, not allyship. Do the internal work for the external results. I agree. It is critically important that people who look me are aware of the privileges that come with whiteness. While whiteness is socially constructed, it impacts our lives in many ways that may be invisible if you are not consciously aware. I understand that I do not belong in every space. I know this may surprise some folks, but everything is not ours or for us. White privilege affords me the benefit of the doubt, ability to move freely through most spaces without question, access, safety with police (usually), and opportunities denied to people I love. I see the harm of racism impact my loved ones every day and I also see how my Dad and I are treated differently. We have a responsibility to use our privilege to eradicate #racism. For that to happen we must learn and understand how white supremacy was crafted and be willing to listen, learn, challenge stereotypes and false biological beliefs, and make change. That is my focus. I never enter sacred and private spaces without invitation and permission. I strive to use my unearned (and unwanted) privilege to eradicate racism, oppression, and bias. I make mistakes and you will too. Apologize, learn and keep going. People of the global majority are not responsible for teaching us or leading us. This is our problem to fix. We created racism and we must end it. Ending racism is #everybodyswork. We are all harmed by racism.

Thinking about what today's young people are experiencing--increased racism, book bans, attacks on Black student excellence (which is what the challenge to AP Black Studies targeted and affected most)--I thought I'd share a chapter from my life that shaped me in unimaginable ways. It's a story about battling racism in school; a professor who tried to intimidate and humiliate me into failing not just in his class, but forever. Like those who came before us, my generation rose above the hate, the bigotry, the stereotypes, and the violence, so today's children wouldn't have to. So, what do we tell our children? We tell them what my family told me, what your family likely told you, and what the Civil Rights Movement still teaches us: "Ain' gon' let nobody turn me round." And this: "Keep your eye on the prize. Hold on!" It's been a journey of resilience, growth and breaking free from the chains that held me back. Now, experiences like these power our vigilance for the sake of those who follow in our footsteps. Happy Black History Month, Day 5! Did you know that we have Black legislators to thank for the existence of public school education for every child nationally from their efforts in the 1870s? Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones taught me this in "The 1619 Project," a must-read book for those desiring to educate themselves about the contributions of Black Americans in this country beginning when the first Black people arrived on this continent in 1619. Hannah-Jones explains in her essay "Democracy" that once Congress passed the Fifteenth Amendment establishing the right to vote for all men, Black Americans were elected into local, state and federal offices, including 16 U.S. congressmen and 2 U.S. senators. Over 600 Black men served as Southern state legislators. "These Black officials joined with white Republicans... to write the most egalitarian state constitutions the South had ever seen. They helped pass more equitable tax legislation and laws that prohibited discrimination in public transportation, accommodations, and housing. Perhaps their biggest achievement was the establishment of that most democratic of American institutions: the public school. "Public education effectively did not exist in the South before Reconstruction. The white elite sent their children to private schools, while the poor white children went without an education. But newly freed Black people, who had been prohibited from learning to read and write during slavery, were desperate for an education, which they saw as integral to true liberty. So Black legislators successfully pushed for a universal, state-funded system of schools -- not just for their own children but for white children, too. Black legislators also helped pass the first compulsory education laws in the region. Southern children, Black and white, were now required to attend schools, the way their Northern counterparts did. Just five years into Reconstruction, every Southern state had enshrined the right to a public education for all children into its constitution."
